It’s not actually in Bude proper – you’re tucked away in this proper countryside setting just outside town, and honestly, that’s exactly what makes it special. The Chappell cottage (there are several scattered around the property) sits in what feels like your own private slice of Cornwall, with those thick stone walls and beams that actually mean something here, not just decorative nonsense. When you pull up the gravel drive, there’s this immediate sense of stepping away from everything – no traffic noise, just sheep in the distance and maybe the odd tractor rumbling by. The cottage itself is beautifully done without being fussy about it, if that makes sense. Everything works properly (the shower pressure is actually decent, which isn’t always a given in these old conversions), and they’ve managed to keep the character without making you feel like you’re camping.

What I really appreciate is how they’ve thought about the practical stuff. There’s proper parking right outside your door, the kitchen is actually equipped for cooking real meals – not just reheating tourist food – and the beds are genuinely comfortable, not just pretty to look at. The location works brilliantly too, because you’re about a ten-minute drive from Bude’s beaches but far enough out that you get proper dark skies at night and wake up to birdsong instead of traffic. The coastal path is easily accessible from here, and if you’re into walking, you can actually reach some of the quieter stretches without fighting for parking spots like you do closer to town. I mean, Widemouth Bay gets absolutely rammed in summer, but from Treworgie you can find your way to spots that feel almost undiscovered.

The whole setup just works, really – it’s got that 9.6 rating for good reason. The owners clearly live nearby and actually care about the place, which shows in everything from the welcome pack (local bread, proper milk, not just UHT sachets) to the way the garden is maintained. You get the feeling they want you to love Cornwall the way they do, rather than just extracting money from tourists. It’s perfect for couples wanting to properly switch off, or families who don’t mind being a bit out of the way in exchange for space and peace. Just don’t expect nightlife on your doorstep – the nearest proper pub is a short drive, but that’s sort of the point. This is where you come to remember what quiet actually sounds like, then venture out to explore one of the most beautiful bits of coastline in the country when you’re ready for adventure.
