Walking up to Homelands in Port Isaac, you immediately get that feeling you’ve stumbled onto something special. This four-star boutique hotel sits right in the heart of one of Cornwall’s most photogenic fishing villages — you know, the one where they film Doc Martin. The building itself has that classic Cornish charm without trying too hard, and honestly, the location couldn’t be better if you’d handpicked it yourself.

The Village Setting

Port Isaac is one of those places that looks almost too perfect to be real, with its narrow cobbled streets winding down to a tiny harbor. What I love about staying at Homelands is that you’re literally in the thick of it all — the village’s slate-roofed cottages, the working fishing boats, and those impossibly narrow lanes that somehow manage to fit cars (though I wouldn’t recommend driving down them). The recent guests have been rating the location a perfect 10.0, and I can see why. You can walk to the harbor in about two minutes, and the South West Coast Path is right there if you fancy a proper coastal hike.

The Room Experience

The rooms at Homelands strike that perfect balance between comfort and character. My room had those lovely period details you’d hope for — think exposed beams and thick stone walls — but with all the modern touches that actually matter. The beds are genuinely comfortable (not just hotel-brochure comfortable), and the bathrooms are well-appointed without being flashy. What really impressed me was the attention to detail — proper blackout curtains, decent water pressure, and windows that actually open properly to let in that fresh sea air.

Dining and Local Flavors

While Homelands doesn’t have its own restaurant, this actually works in your favor because Port Isaac has some fantastic dining options within walking distance. The Golden Lion is practically next door and does excellent pub food, while the harbor-side spots serve up fresh crab sandwiches that’ll ruin you for anywhere else. The hotel staff are brilliant at pointing you toward the best places depending on what you’re after — whether that’s a romantic dinner or just a proper Cornish pasty.

What sets Homelands apart is how it manages to feel both intimate and professional. The staff genuinely seem to care about your stay, offering local insights that you won’t find in guidebooks.
