Hotel Description
You know what struck me first about the Rashleigh Arms? It’s not trying too hard to be anything other than what it is – a proper Cornish inn that happens to sit in one of the most photogenic spots in St Austell. I mean, Charlestown Road literally leads you down to that famous Georgian harbor where they film all those period dramas, so you’re basically staying a stone’s throw from where Poldark was getting all brooding and shirtless.
The place has this lived-in comfort that I actually prefer to those sterile chain hotels. Sure, it’s got its 4-star credentials, but honestly, it feels more like staying at your well-traveled aunt’s house – if your aunt had excellent taste and knew how to run a proper pub downstairs. The rooms are genuinely cozy without being cramped, and here’s something I appreciated: the windows actually open properly, which is brilliant when you want that sea air without the full coastal wind experience. Parking’s right there too, which might sound boring but trust me, after driving those narrow Cornish lanes, you’ll be grateful not to hunt for a spot.
What really sets this place apart is how plugged in it is to actual Cornish life. The pub downstairs isn’t just for tourists – you’ll find locals propping up the bar, especially on quiz nights, and the food is that perfect mix of elevated pub grub and proper local ingredients. I had the best fish pie here, and I’m pretty sure the fish was swimming in St Austell Bay that morning. The staff genuinely know the area too – not just the obvious Eden Project recommendation, but they’ll point you toward the good coastal walks and which beaches are worth the drive. Plus, and this is key if you’re planning to explore, you’re perfectly positioned between the tourist magnets and the quieter bits of Cornwall. Fowey’s just up the road, the Lost Gardens of Heligan are close enough for an afternoon trip, but you can also wander down to Charlestown harbor in five minutes and feel like you’ve stepped onto a film set. Honestly, for the money and the location, it’s hard to beat – just don’t expect cutting-edge luxury, expect character and genuine Cornish hospitality instead.
