You know what? Hotel Meudon surprised me – and I don’t say that lightly after staying in dozens of Cornish hotels over the years. It sits on Maenporth Road in this perfectly unassuming spot that’s actually genius when you think about it. You’re literally a five-minute stroll down to Maenporth Beach (the locals’ favorite because it’s way less mental than the main Falmouth beaches), but far enough up the hill that you’re not dealing with the summer crowds wandering past your window at all hours.

The thing about this place is it feels properly Cornish without trying too hard, if that makes sense. The building itself has this lovely weathered stone look that fits right into the landscape, and honestly, the views from the upper floors are pretty spectacular – you get these glimpses of the coast through the trees that change completely depending on the light. I stayed in October and the morning mist rolling off the water was just… well, you get the picture. The rooms are what you’d expect from a solid 4-star – nothing groundbreaking but everything works, decent shower pressure (which matters more than people admit), and they’ve clearly put some thought into the furnishings without going overboard on the nautical theme like half the hotels down here do.

What really sold me though was how the staff actually knew the area. Ask them about the best time to hit Trebah Gardens (early morning, trust me) or where to grab proper fish and chips that aren’t tourist traps, and they’ll steer you right. The parking situation is refreshingly straightforward too – there’s a proper car park, which anyone who’s driven around Falmouth town center will appreciate. I mean, the breakfast could be a touch more inspired, and the Wi-Fi gets a bit patchy in some corners of the building, but these are small gripes really. The location alone makes it worth considering, especially if you want to explore both the Helford River area and central Falmouth without being stuck in either. You’re about ten minutes from the town center but you feel like you’re in proper Cornwall, not just another seaside resort. For the price point and that 8.1 rating, it delivers exactly what it promises – a comfortable base that doesn’t feel like every other chain hotel, run by people who actually care about getting the details right.
