Hotel Description
Look, I’ve stayed in plenty of quirky places, but this converted classroom in Fowey actually works – and I mean really works. The moment you walk into the Classroom Flat on Daglands Road, you get this instant hit of nostalgia mixed with genuine surprise at how thoughtfully they’ve transformed the space. The old school building has these gorgeous high ceilings and massive windows that flood the place with light, which honestly makes even a rainy Cornwall morning feel pretty magical.
What struck me most was how they’ve kept the character without making it feel like some gimmicky theme hotel. You’ll notice the original features – the worn wooden floors have this perfect patina that speaks to decades of use, and there’s something oddly comforting about sleeping where kids once learned their multiplication tables. The conversion is smart too; they’ve created a proper living space that doesn’t feel cramped or awkward like some of these heritage conversions can. The kitchen setup is actually functional (I cooked pasta in there, no complaints), and the bed situation is comfortable enough that I didn’t wake up feeling like I’d been wrestling with Victorian-era springs all night.
Here’s what you need to know about the location – Fowey town centre means you’re genuinely walking distance from everything that matters. I’m talking two minutes to the harbor where you can catch the little passenger ferry across to Polruan, maybe five minutes down to the waterfront restaurants where the locals actually eat. The Rashleigh Inn is practically around the corner if you want proper pub food, and Ready Money Cove – this tiny perfect beach that tourists somehow miss – is close enough for an early morning swim if you’re brave enough for Cornish waters. Parking can be a bit of a dance in Fowey (it always is), but there’s usually something on the surrounding streets if you’re patient. The 8.6 rating makes sense when you factor in that you’re getting genuine character, a central location, and enough space to actually relax – which isn’t always a given in these historic town centres where everything’s usually either cramped cottages or overpriced hotel rooms with zero personality. It’s the sort of place that makes you feel like you’ve discovered something special, even though you know other people have obviously figured it out too.
