Hotel Description
You know what caught me off guard about Wild Air Guest House? The name actually makes perfect sense once you’re there – perched up on Polkirt Hill like that, you really do feel like you’re breathing different air. I mean, Mevagissey can get pretty packed during summer (especially when the Eden Project crowds spill over), but up here it’s honestly like you’ve found this secret pocket above all the harbor bustle.
The thing about staying on the hill is you get these views that most people never see. Sure, everyone knows the postcard shots of Mevagissey’s colorful houses clustered around the harbor, but from Wild Air you’re looking down at the whole show – the fishing boats coming and going, tourists wandering the narrow streets below, and on clear days you can actually see way out past St. Austell Bay. The walk down to the village takes maybe ten minutes (though coming back up… well, let’s just say you’ll feel those Cornish pasties). But honestly, that little separation from the chaos is exactly what makes this place work. You get to experience proper Mevagissey – the early morning fish deliveries, the evening light hitting the water just right – without being stuck in the middle of summer crowds fighting over ice cream.
What really sets Wild Air apart though is how they’ve managed to feel both polished and genuinely welcoming. The rooms have that crisp, well-thought-out comfort you’d expect from a 4-star place, but there’s none of that stuffy hotel vibe. Actually, the owners clearly know their stuff about what travelers actually need – decent Wi-Fi (surprisingly good for Cornwall), proper shower pressure, and thank god, sufficient parking. You’d be amazed how many places around here just assume you’ll figure out the parking situation yourself. The breakfast situation is solid too, though I’d recommend getting down early if you want the window table with harbor views.
I’ll be honest, the 9.8 rating initially made me a bit skeptical – seemed almost too good to be true – but after staying there I get it. It’s not trying to be the fanciest place in Cornwall or compete with those massive resort hotels you see advertised everywhere. Instead, it’s just really, really good at being exactly what it is: a thoughtfully run guest house in one of Cornwall’s most photogenic fishing villages, positioned just perfectly to let you enjoy the best parts without the headaches. If you’re planning to explore the area (the coastal path is spectacular, and you’re perfectly positioned for day trips to the Lost Gardens of Heligan or Charlestown), this is honestly one of the better bases I’ve found on this stretch of coast.
