Hotel Description

Look, I’ll be honest – when I first pulled up to Whitsand Bay Tamar Bedroom on Donkey Lane (yes, that’s actually the street name), I wasn’t sure what to expect. The address sounds a bit quirky, and Millbrook isn’t exactly the first place that comes to mind when you think Cornwall coast. But you know what? Sometimes the best finds are the ones hiding in plain sight.

This 4-star spot sits right in that sweet zone between Torpoint and Looe, which means you’re actually getting the best of both worlds without the tourist chaos. The bedroom itself – and I mean, it’s essentially a beautifully done accommodation rather than a full hotel experience – really surprised me with how thoughtfully everything was set up. The owners clearly know their stuff when it comes to what travelers actually need. There’s proper storage space (not just a tiny wardrobe that fits three hangers), decent lighting for reading, and honestly, the bed was one of those where you wake up wondering why your mattress at home is so terrible. The 8.5 rating makes total sense once you’re there – it’s not trying to be the Ritz, but what it does, it does really well.

What I loved most was the location, though I suspect a lot of people drive right past without realizing what they’re missing. You’re literally minutes from Whitsand Bay beach – and I mean the good bits where locals go, not just the packed car park areas. Downderry is right there too, which has this fantastic little stretch of coast that feels almost Mediterranean on a decent day (well, as Mediterranean as Cornwall gets). The thing is, staying here puts you close enough to hit Looe or even Plymouth for dinner, but you come back to actual quiet at night. No drunk tourists stumbling around, no traffic – just proper sleep. Parking was straightforward too, which anyone who’s tried to park in St. Ives will appreciate.

The only thing I’d mention – and this isn’t really a criticism – is that if you’re expecting full hotel services like room service or a concierge, this isn’t that kind of place. It’s more like staying at a really well-appointed friend’s house who happens to have excellent taste and knows how to make guests comfortable. Check-in was smooth, everything was spotless, and there were those little touches that show someone actually cares about the experience. Even the morning light coming through the windows felt deliberate, if that makes sense. For the price point and what you get, especially in this part of Cornwall where decent accommodation can be hit or miss, it’s actually a bit of a steal. I’d definitely go back, particularly in shoulder season when you can have those coastal walks practically to yourself.

    Superb location

What could be improved: All was lovely

  • Russell from United Kingdom – 21 June 2025 (7/10)

Welcome was great. The bed was super comfortable and it was good that there was ample tea, coffee, and milk in the room. The restaurant's food quality was great, although a bit pricey.

What could be improved: Room 5's window in the bathroom didn't open and the extractor wasn't working. It would be great in summer for a top sheet as an option instead of a duvet. With no fan or airflow possible through the room, the temperature was uncomfortable 🥵.

What could be improved: Needed fridge

Overall very good value for the budget. Simple but very adequate layout to the accommodation.
Lovely area, great base to visit Cornwall / Devon
A very respectable 8 out of 10 but could easily be a 9 for the price point!

What could be improved: Very minor points: bathroom sink tap wasn't the best to use. Walls were a bit thin so you could hear the next door TV quite loudly (fortunately, only the one evening of the three we stayed). Walls were a bit grubby – a very quick touch up of paint every few weeks would make such a difference to the appearance of the room.

  • Philip from United Kingdom – 16 June 2025 (9/10)

The location and the cleanliness of the room. The staff were helpful and it was great value for money.

    What could be improved: Nothing

  • Paul from United Kingdom – 12 June 2025 (9/10)

Great rooms with a fantastic view over Plymouth and the Tamar river.
The rooms were basic and small but they were very comfortable, exceptionally clean and had all the essential facilities/amenities.
A shout out to Sharon who cleaned the rooms – she was very friendly and helpful.
The rooms represented very good value for money and I would definitely return.

What could be improved: Sadly, there was nowhere apart from the floor to put a cup of tea/book, etc, next to the bed.
The onsite restaurant was not open for breakfast and there were no facilities to make toast or anything in the room.

  • Steve from United Kingdom – 8 June 2025 (9/10)

Wonderful stay, whilst walking the SWCP, with the opportunity to use the swimming pool, eat & relax in the bar in the evening.

What could be improved: No provision for breakfast.

  • Sara from United Kingdom – 5 June 2025 (9/10)

    Accomodation good for price

    What could be improved: Nothing

  • Marcus from United Kingdom – 29 May 2025 (9/10)

    The views are spectacular.

What could be improved: The narrow routes round here that other drivers struggle with.

  • Mitchellmg from United Kingdom – 22 May 2025 (8/10)

A good value stay in a very clean, well-appointed chalet-style room.

What could be improved: Unfortunately, there is no breakfast anywhere on site. I knew that it was not included in my booking, of course. However, this could be solved instantly with the addition of a small fridge.
