Look, I’ve stayed at plenty of places in Cornwall, but the Upper Deck in Saint Erth genuinely surprised me – and honestly, that doesn’t happen often anymore. You know those hotels where everything just feels… right? This is one of them. The moment you pull up (and yes, there’s actually decent parking, which anyone who’s driven around this part of Cornwall will appreciate), you get this immediate sense that someone really cares about this place. It’s not flashy or trying too hard, just solid and welcoming in that proper Cornish way.

What really gets me about the Upper Deck is how they’ve nailed the balance between being polished and still feeling genuine. The rooms have this lovely weight to them – I mean the fabrics, the furniture, even the way the doors close with that satisfying click rather than that hollow hotel thud. And the views… well, Saint Erth isn’t exactly on the coast, but they’ve managed to position things so you’re looking out over proper countryside, not some car park or industrial estate. The staff actually know the area too, which is rarer than you’d think. When I asked about getting to St. Ives without dealing with the summer parking nightmare, they didn’t just hand me a generic leaflet – they walked me through the train connection (Saint Erth station is literally a few minutes away) and mentioned which carriages to avoid during peak times.

Here’s what I really love though – the place just works without making a big song and dance about it. The WiFi actually reaches your room and doesn’t cut out every five minutes. The shower has proper pressure. The heating responds when you adjust it. These sound like basic things, but you’d be amazed how many four-star places mess up the fundamentals. And the breakfast… look, I’m not usually one to get excited about hotel breakfast, but they do this thing with local eggs and proper Cornish bacon that had me getting up earlier just to make sure I didn’t miss it. The dining room gets lovely morning light too, so you’re not eating in some windowless cave like so many places. Honestly, with a 9.7 rating, I was half-expecting it to be one of those places that’s all style and no substance, but the Upper Deck has both – just delivered in a refreshingly understated way that feels very… well, very Cornwall, really.

  Schitterend nieuw appartement in een rustige omgeving. De inrichting is ruim en modern, met een mooi zicht op de omgeving. Ook de slaapkamer zijn ruim en luxueus.
  
  What could be improved: Niets wat het appartement betreft. Enkel de hanglamp in de leefruimte kregen we niet aan. Jammer dat er na een bericht, aan de host niet werd gereageerd.
