Hotel Description

You know what really struck me about Treworgie Barton – Duchy? It’s one of those places that feels properly Cornish without trying too hard to prove it. When you pull up to this converted farmstead just outside Bude, there’s this immediate sense that you’ve stumbled onto something special – not flashy special, but genuinely authentic. The stone buildings have that weathered charm you only get from centuries of Atlantic weather, and honestly, the whole setup feels more like staying at a really stylish friend’s countryside retreat than a typical hotel. I mean, a 9.4 rating doesn’t just happen by accident, and after spending time here, you’ll understand why guests keep coming back.

The location is actually brilliant once you get your bearings. You’re far enough from Bude’s summer crowds to hear actual silence at night (well, except for the sheep – they have opinions), but close enough that you can walk to Summerleaze Beach in about fifteen minutes if you take the coastal path. The rooms themselves are what really won me over though – they’ve managed to keep all the character of the original farm buildings while adding proper modern comfort. Think exposed beams and thick stone walls, but with heating that actually works and showers with decent pressure. The beds are those heavy, sink-into-them types that make you sleep like the dead, which is exactly what you want after a day hiking the South West Coast Path. And here’s something I appreciated – the staff genuinely know the area. When I asked about avoiding the tourist traps in Bude, they pointed me toward this brilliant little café on Belle Vue that I never would’ve found otherwise.

What sets this place apart is how they’ve embraced being a working farm rather than hiding from it. You’ll hear the occasional tractor in the morning, catch glimpses of actual farm life happening around you, and the breakfast features eggs from their own chickens – which, okay, sounds a bit twee when I write it down, but it’s actually lovely. The whole experience feels refreshingly unpretentious. They’re not trying to be a boutique hotel or a luxury resort; they’re just being themselves, and themselves happens to be really, really good at hospitality. If you’re looking for somewhere that captures the real Cornwall – the one that exists beyond the cream tea shops and surf schools – this is your spot. Just book ahead during summer, because word’s getting out about this gem.

Reviews

  • Andy from United Kingdom – 2 June 2025 (10/10)

The host and wider family that we interacted with during our stay were all very happy to assist with queries. And all went above and beyond to ensure we were comfortable during our stay. We found the property extremely good value for money and a wonderful remote location which wasn't too far from local amenities. We travelled for leisure as a group of 8. Four adults and four children and the property was highly enjoyed by all.

What could be improved: Being totally honest their really wasnt much that could be done to improve our stay. That said however, I did mark the review down slightly on cleanliness mind, due to the property attracting a number of flies by the windows – albiet doppy ones that weren't very fast and were easy to catch and diposed of. That said, dont be put off too much by that as it didnt really have a negative effect on out stay and we would book again. We spoke to the property owners about this during our stay and they were aware and trying to workout a solution.

  • Sandy from United Kingdom – 19 May 2025 (10/10)

Hosts very friendly. Accommodation and setting was exceptional. We had a fantastic stay and would definitely return.

What could be improved: Having to leave

  • Hannah from United Kingdom – 30 March 2025 (9/10)

Duchy cottage was absolutely lovely, very clean, and comfortable. Unfortunately we couldn't really use the hot tub on the first evening because it wasn't heating up, but a chap sorted the problem and it was fine for the Saturday.
The owners/staff that we met were really nice. There is a small games room that the teenagers enjoyed. It was a very quiet and picturesque location. About 10/15 minutes from Bude, but there is a shop just a couple of miles (maybe not even that far) up the road.

  • Sophie from United Kingdom – 16 February 2025 (9/10)

Everything! We couldn’t have asked for more. The hot tub was lovely, the beds were comfy and the kitchen had everything we could need. The games room was a great extra which kept us all entertained. We booked last minute and the hosts were really accommodating. Thank you so much.

What could be improved: Nothing, we will definitely look to book a return trip.

  • Ann from United Kingdom – 23 January 2025 (10/10)

We loved the hot tub, perfect for the cold days, place was clean and cosy. Bedding lovely and high quality

What could be improved: Be mindful the house can be hard for those unsteady on their feet with the stairs, not a fault just thinking of those that struggle with mobility. Something I should have considered for my mum, but she managed

  • Janet from United Kingdom – 14 January 2025 (9/10)

Very quiet, beds comfy, place very clean.

What could be improved: Not that we didn’t like but an observation! Maybe sofas might need replacing in future as very low and quite uncomfy due to use also new frying pan and saucepan would be a advantage

  • Gerry from United Kingdom – 20 November 2024 (8/10)

The place is beautiful, the staff are excellent

What could be improved: The only thing that could have improved our stay was maybe a slightly later check out.

  • Debby from United Kingdom – 3 November 2024 (10/10)

Lucie was amazing! She welcomed us and explained useful information. She was incredibly friendly and looked after us. The accommodation was even better than the photos! Would highly recommend.

  • Alistair from United Kingdom – 26 October 2024 (10/10)

    Lovely cottage value for money

    What could be improved: Nothing

  • Carrie from United Kingdom – 18 September 2024 (9/10)

A beautiful well maintained property, we were welcomed by the lovely Lucie on arrival and made to feel extremely welcome. The Hot-tub was a lovely added touch!
