Hotel Description

Look, I’ve stayed in plenty of converted barns that promise rustic charm but deliver spider webs and drafty corners – Trewethen Cottage Barn 2 isn’t one of them. This place actually gets it right, tucked away in Trelill just outside Port Isaac where you can still hear the sea but escape the summer crowds that pack the village streets. The conversion here is thoughtful, you know what I mean? They kept the character – those thick stone walls and exposed beams that make you feel properly settled in Cornwall – but added proper heating and a kitchen that doesn’t make you curse every time you try to cook.

What really struck me was how quiet it gets at night. I mean, Port Isaac itself can be a bit of a zoo during the day (especially if the Doc Martin tour buses are doing their rounds), but up here in Trelill you’re far enough removed that evenings feel genuinely peaceful. The cottage sits on this working farm, so honestly, the biggest noise you’ll get is the occasional sheep being dramatic about something. The owners clearly know their stuff – there’s proper parking right there, which anyone who’s tried to navigate Port Isaac’s narrow streets with a car will appreciate. Check-in was refreshingly straightforward too, none of that awkward waiting around wondering if you’re at the right door.

Here’s the thing though – and this is important if you’re planning to explore – you’ll want a car. The walk down to Port Isaac is doable but it’s about twenty minutes each way, and coming back up that hill after a few pints at the Golden Lion will remind you why Cornwall builds character. But actually, that location works in your favor because you’re perfectly positioned for the whole north coast. Tintagel’s fifteen minutes away, you can hit Padstow for lunch without it being a whole expedition, and if you fancy something different, Bodmin Moor’s right there when you need a break from all the coastal beauty. The cottage itself feels substantial – proper thick walls that keep things cool in summer and cozy when the weather turns. I stayed in October and honestly, some evenings I barely needed the heating. Plus there’s something satisfying about making your morning coffee in a space that’s been sheltering people for probably a couple hundred years, even if the coffee machine is decidedly 21st century.

    Centrally located to popular locations.
Apartment was spotlessly clean, host made us very welcome.
Room was equipped with quality items (tv, drink making things, etc…) and not the usual cheap stuff that some hosts have in theirs.
Everything had been thought about, even down to the provision of washing up liquid and pot washing sponge.
The converted dairy shed is located in a quiet location, away from the hustle and bustle of a busy holiday location, it was fantastic to open the French doors in a morning and hear the birds twittering, and not the sound of traffic and people.
The WiFi speed was decent too, we took our Amazon Fire Stick, so we could watch PAYG TV at night, we suffered no buffering when streaming in 4K.
Plenty of room to park a large vehicle, clear booking in instructions were given, along with what3words coordinates, so we could find the place easily.
    Would definitely recommend this.

    Peaceful setting
    Well presented
    Close to Doc Martin Territory.
Local pub nearby with huge meals.

What could be improved: Nothing really. Typical narrow English country lanes. Caution ⚠️ always paramount.

  • Bernadette from United Kingdom – 19 August 2024 (9/10)

The hosts are unbelievably kind helpful and friendly. The accommodation is like staying in a hotel room with large fluffy towels and lovely hand soap. The property is very clean and comfortable. As there are no cooking facilities ( there is a kettle, mini fridge and toaster) you only need cereal, bread and snacks in the room. Tea / coffee and sugar are provided. On arrival you get an absolutely beautiful homemade scone with jam, cream and plenty of milk for your hot drinks. There is a cafe in the village which is about a mile away for a cooked breakfast if you want it and a local country pub for a hearty lunch or evening meal. The view from your room is a lovely nature type area with birds, butterflys, squirrels and the local cows in the next field. Hearing them mooing in the morning is just lovely. There is a flat screen TV in the room with freeview and netflix if you fancy a film night..there are some lovely walks around the area. Long country lanes with very little traffic. So peaceful and quiet. The area beyond has the most beautiful beaches for more coastal walks or relaxing days on the beach. The hosts recommended some great places for us to visit including where to buy the best cornish pasties. We had a lovely stay.

What could be improved: It is the country so expect country smells
