Hotel Description

You know what? I wasn’t expecting much when I first pulled up to Trewethen Cottage Barn 1 – honestly, I’d driven past those converted barns near Port Isaac dozens of times without giving them a second thought. But this place actually surprised me in the best way. The moment you step inside, there’s this lovely contrast between the original stone walls and beams (which they’ve kept beautifully intact) and these really thoughtful modern touches that don’t feel forced or trying too hard. The kitchen’s properly equipped too – I mean, you can actually cook a decent meal here, not just heat up beans. And the bed? Well, let’s just say I slept better than I have in months.

What really makes this spot special though is how it sits in relation to everything else. You’re literally a ten-minute walk down to Port Isaac’s harbor – you know, where they film that Doc Martin show – but you’re just far enough up the hill that you don’t get the summer crowds wandering past your windows at all hours. The parking situation is brilliant too, which anyone who’s tried to navigate Port Isaac in July will tell you is worth its weight in gold. There’s this lovely view across the fields toward the coast, and on clear mornings (which happen more often than you’d think in Cornwall), you can actually catch glimpses of the sea. The cottage gets the morning light beautifully, and there’s something really satisfying about having your coffee while watching the fishing boats head out. I’ll be honest – the shower pressure could be better, but that seems to be a Cornwall cottage thing rather than anything specific to this place.

The whole setup just works, you know? It feels like someone’s actually thought about how people want to spend their time here rather than just ticking boxes. The hosts clearly know the area – they left this brilliant little folder with proper local recommendations, not just the obvious tourist spots but places like the Slipway for the best crab sandwiches and which footpath to take if you want to walk to Tintagel without dealing with the main road. Plus, that 9.3 rating isn’t just people being polite – this really is one of those places where everything’s been done right without making a big fuss about it. Perfect for couples wanting a proper Cornwall escape, or honestly, just for anyone who wants to remember why they love this part of the world in the first place.

It's lovely and private. The cream tea on arrival is delicious. Tracey and Andy are friendly, helpful hosts, enjoyed our conversations.
It can be an adventure to get there for those not used to the lanes of England, but fun.

What could be improved: Slightly aromatic at times, but to be expected, you are in the country after all, and those businesses were there first!

Barn 1 had all we needed. Very nice, well appointed cottage with bathroom. Quiet country setting. Great outdoor private patio. Morning tea/coffee supplies are in the room. We were provided with Cornish Cream Tea for the first morning, with scones, clotted cream, strawberries. It was so welcoming!
Close to day trips to Tantagel, Port Isaac, Wadebridge for shopping and cafes, Polzeath beach – BEAUTIFUL! Two days was not long enough.♥️ We met our host Tracey who made us feel special as guests.

What could be improved: slightly difficult to find exact driveway in the dark or rain due to entrance having a small sign (for those of us with not so good eyesight)

  • Alan from Australia – 20 September 2024 (9/10)

The cottage Barn was such a lovely place to stay. On arrival,we had fresh scones, which we enjoyed on the balcony. The host was wonderful and pointed us to a great local pub.
The room was beautifully decorated, and the location was quiet and close to several beautiful seaside villages. Highly recommend

    What could be improved: Nothing
