Hotel Description

You know what caught me off guard about Trevithick Cottage? The name makes it sound like some quaint little thatched-roof place, but it’s actually part of the Tolroy Manor setup in Hayle – and honestly, that’s not a bad thing at all. I mean, you get the cottage feel without being stuck in the middle of nowhere, plus they’ve finally sorted out the internet situation (hence that slightly awkward but very necessary mention of fiber in the name).

The location is pretty clever when you think about it. Hayle’s one of those Cornish towns that tourists often zoom right through on their way to St. Ives or Penzance, but staying here actually makes a lot of sense. You’re close enough to hit the famous beaches – Gwithian’s practically on your doorstep, and that’s where the locals go when they want to avoid the Carbis Bay crowds. The cottage itself sits in this sort of residential area that feels properly Cornish without being touristy, if that makes sense. There’s decent parking too, which anyone who’s tried to navigate St. Ives in summer will appreciate.

What I really liked was how they’ve managed to keep the cottage character while making it actually functional for modern travelers. The rooms have that low-ceiling, cozy feel you want from a Cornish cottage, but the wifi actually works (seriously, the fiber upgrade was needed), and you’re not constantly bumping your head or dealing with dodgy plumbing. The whole Tolroy Manor area has this established, residential vibe – you’ll hear the occasional dog walker in the morning, but it’s properly quiet at night. Check-in was straightforward, none of that awkward waiting around wondering if anyone’s actually there. The 4-star rating feels about right – it’s comfortable and well-maintained without being fancy, and that 8.2 guest rating suggests most people leave pretty satisfied.

During my stay, I kept thinking this would be perfect for people who want to explore west Cornwall properly without paying St. Ives prices or dealing with the summer chaos. You can walk to Hayle’s town center in about ten minutes – there’s a decent Tesco if you need supplies, and the train station connects you to the St. Ives branch line, which is honestly one of the prettier train rides in Cornwall. The beaches here are massive and wild, especially at low tide when you can walk for miles. Sure, it’s not as postcard-pretty as some of the fishing villages, but you get a much better sense of how Cornwall actually works as a place, not just a holiday destination.

Reviews

  • Oleg from United Kingdom – 13 April 2024 (9/10)

    Was clean.
    Spacious.
The kitchen has all the necessary cutlery.

What could be improved: Far from the beach

  • James from United Kingdom – 25 June 2023 (8/10)

Good value for money. Good location to get to a lot of attractions and not too far to go to the beach.

Facilities on the site are not bad for a young family.

What could be improved: WiFi is available via a Vodafone dongle it's OK for looking a the odd website on one device but speed and connectivity are not great. Generally a bad area for phone reception. The shower is rather cramp only a small square cubicle.

Steep stairs and no way of blocking them off with a adventurous 18 month old it made it hard.

  • Vincent from United Kingdom – 28 May 2023 (9/10)

We got an amazing deal here, and we truly can't fault the location, grounds, facilities,my only negative is that the site entertainment isn't available on a Sunday.
    We will definitely be back!

  • E from United Kingdom – 17 April 2023 (8/10)

Good sized bedrooms. Comfortable beds. Decent living space.

What could be improved: The kitchen was very small but adequate.

  • Melanie from United Kingdom – 2 June 2024 (9/10)

Great location for exploring Cornwall. Short drive to St Michael's Mount, St Ives etc. kitchen was small but well equipped. Toiletries, towels, bedding etc. was welcomed touch. The site was great with small pool which my son loved. Passes were very well priced at £18 for the whole house! Much better than previous sites where you pay per person etc. food on site was good quality and great value. Would recommend for a family base in Cornwall

What could be improved: If im being extra picky id say it's not by the sea/beach. The site isn't in walking distance of the sea and certainly not the beach. You can drive and park at Hayle beach for a reasonable price and it's not overly busy compared to the main tourist areas like St Ives

  • Mary from United Kingdom – 5 November 2023 (7/10)

very clean property. Comfortable beds and settees. Convenient location for st Ives and Penzance. Well equipped kitchen though small. Convenient Key safe. Decent table to eat and play at. Good heaters kept us cosy. Informative hosts.

What could be improved: Faulty oven which overheated. Slight smell of cat wee which was off putting at first. No freezer. Website did not say the Park facilities were not open the weekend we went although the host did inform us after we had booked and gave us a chance to cancel the booking if we wanted.

  • Sherry from United Kingdom – 15 August 2023 (8/10)

The fact that little extras such as toiletries were included. Was a very nice touch. House was fully equipped and very clean and the owners very kindly included a cot and extra tv upon my request….many thanks. The house was very presentable

What could be improved: Even when connecting to.the mobile wifi, still, there was hardly any connection. Could not even make calls. The mattresses were not very comfy.

  • Dianne from United Kingdom – 22 September 2024 (7/10)

    The accommodation was good.
Beds were very uncomfortable tho. Mattress on our bed was really uncomfortable so didn't sleep very well.
We thought it was going to be within walking distance to the beach.
But we made the most of it.

What could be improved: Not close to the beach as we first thought

  • Dean from United Kingdom – 15 June 2025 (9/10)

Loved our lodge. Whilst it was off season, for me, my wife and our dog, everything was lovely. We had a fantastic stay and would book again without hesitation. The staff were accommodating, friendly and helpful.

What could be improved: Not a fair criticism of the service or lodge, but there wasn't great areas to walk a dog with high exercise needs without driving. If you do drive, Hayle beach is incredible for your dog.

  • Mariam from United Kingdom – 26 August 2024 (9/10)

I stayed here at the end of July. It was a very enjoyable and comfortable stay. A real home away from home. The property was fully stocked with all the conveniences and appliances you may need. This included a fully functional kitchen, TV and board games. There was also towels and bed linens so you don't need to bring your own. The property also had cleaning equipment such as a hoover, broom for when you have come back from a sandy beach as well as a drying rack for wet clothing. There are two bathrooms with a shower on the ground floor and a bath on the top floor. Toilets in both. The site was clean with facilities such as a swimming pool and playground. The staff were extremely helpful, giving us suggestions for where to go and where to park. Great location as well so quick to travel to areas of interest such as Minack Theatre, St Micheals Mount, St Ives, Carbis Bay etc. It was excellent value for money and I would certainly consider booking again if I'm in the area.

What could be improved: There was no freezer so don't bring frozen foods. The on site shop is over-priced but well stocked in an emergency. There is a lidl in town so would do my shopping there if you haven't brought food with you.
