Hotel Description

You know what caught me off guard about Trethorne? I was expecting just another countryside hotel with a golf course attached, but this place actually has some character to it. The setting – honestly, it’s pretty spectacular. Kennards House sits on this rolling estate just outside Launceston, and when you’re driving up through those winding Cornwall lanes (prepare for some proper narrow roads, by the way), you get these glimpses of the golf course stretching out toward Bodmin Moor in the distance. The building itself has that solid, slightly imposing look of a country manor that’s been thoughtfully converted rather than gutted and rebuilt.

What I really appreciate is how they’ve managed to keep things feeling genuine without going overboard on the twee factor. The rooms are comfortable in that understated way – good beds, decent bathrooms, and windows that actually open so you can hear the countryside instead of just air conditioning. The golf course is the real draw here, obviously, and it’s challenging enough to keep serious players happy while not completely destroying weekend hackers like myself. I mean, the 7th hole alone will humble you with those elevation changes. But even if you’re not into golf, there’s something relaxing about having breakfast and watching the early morning players tee off through the mist. The restaurant does a solid job with local ingredients – their Cornwall beef is particularly good, and they don’t try to overcomplicate things with fancy plating and microscopic portions.

Location-wise, you’re perfectly positioned for exploring this part of Cornwall and Devon. Launceston’s just a few minutes away when you need proper shops or that excellent Saturday market, and you can easily day-trip to the coast – Bude’s about half an hour if you fancy some seaside time. The staff seem to actually know the area well, which makes a difference when you’re asking about walking routes or where to find decent pubs that aren’t tourist traps. Parking’s never an issue (thank goodness), and the check-in process is refreshingly straightforward. It’s not the flashiest place you’ll ever stay, and the decor leans a bit conservative, but there’s something to be said for a hotel that focuses on doing the basics really well rather than chasing Instagram moments. The 8.1 rating feels about right – it’s a solid choice that’ll leave you feeling relaxed rather than stressed about whether you picked the right place.
