Hotel Description

You know what? Trehellas House caught me completely off guard. I’d driven through Washaway dozens of times – it’s one of those blink-and-you’ll-miss-it spots between Bodmin and Wadebridge – but I never really noticed this place tucked away there. The building itself is this gorgeous Georgian manor that honestly looks like it should be in a period drama, with that honey-colored Cornish stone that seems to glow when the afternoon light hits it just right.

The whole setup is pretty clever, actually. They’ve got the hotel upstairs and the Courthouse restaurant downstairs, which means you can literally roll out of bed and into what’s genuinely excellent food. I mean, the name “Courthouse” isn’t just for show – this really was the local courthouse back in the day, and they’ve kept some of those original features that give the dining room this wonderfully atmospheric feel. The food’s proper good too, not just hotel restaurant fare – they’re doing modern British stuff with local ingredients, and the Sunday roast is honestly worth planning a trip around. Plus, you’re right in the heart of Cornwall without dealing with the summer madness of the coastal towns. Bodmin’s only ten minutes away if you need proper shops or the railway station, but you’re also perfectly positioned for day trips to the coast – Port Isaac’s about twenty minutes north, or you can hit Padstow in half an hour.

What really sold me on the place was the attention to detail that you only notice when you’re actually staying there. The rooms are properly comfortable (not just pretty), the parking’s sorted without any of that “first come, first served” nonsense you get at so many places, and the staff actually know the area – like, really know it, not just the tourist board highlights. The 8.1 rating makes perfect sense once you’ve been there; it’s one of those places that gets the fundamentals right without trying too hard to be flashy. Sure, it’s not going to win any awards for cutting-edge design, but sometimes you want somewhere that feels like a proper English country hotel without the stuffiness. The location in Washaway might seem random, but it’s actually brilliant – you’re close enough to everything Cornwall offers but far enough from the crowds to feel like you’ve discovered something special. Honestly, it’s the kind of place that makes you want to extend your stay by a night or two, especially if you time it right and can enjoy a proper leisurely dinner downstairs followed by a morning walk through the Cornish countryside before anyone else is awake.

Old character property with free parking. We used it as a base for exploring Cornwall. Good location. Staff were friendly and helpful. Breakfast and dinner were really good.

What could be improved: There's a little bit of traffic noise but it dies down after dark.

This place is a real gem. Friendly helpful staff and clean and comfortable rooms. We went on a half board deal and the food at both dinner and breakfast was exceptional. There is no bar but staff will bring drinks to you on a tray and nothing is too much trouble. Even though the hotel is set back from a busy road we didnt hear any traffic noise at night and slept really well. Like the fact there are no TV's in the main lounges, really is the perfect place for a nice relaxing and peaceful night away. Will definitely be returning.
