Hotel Description

You know what? I’ve stayed at plenty of Cornwall hotels over the years, but Tregrylls Barton is honestly something different. It’s tucked away in Lesnewth – and I mean properly tucked away, not just “off the beaten path” marketing speak. The first time I drove there, I actually missed the turning twice because you’re basically looking for what feels like a farm track off the main road toward Boscastle. But that’s exactly what makes it special.

This place is a proper Cornish barton – think traditional farmstead that’s been converted with real care, not just slapped together for tourists. The buildings have that solid, weathered stone look that you only get from centuries of Atlantic winds, and honestly, the setting is just ridiculous. You’re surrounded by these rolling fields that stretch toward the coast, and on clear mornings (which happen more often than you’d expect), you can actually see the sea glinting in the distance. The owners clearly know what they’re doing – everything feels authentic but comfortable, if that makes sense. Like staying at a well-off friend’s country place rather than a sterile hotel.

What really got me was how quiet it is at night. I mean, properly quiet – no traffic, no city hum, just maybe some sheep in the distance and the wind through the hedgerows. The rooms are beautifully done too, with these thick stone walls that keep everything cool in summer but cozy when it’s blowing a gale outside. And speaking of weather – because this is Cornwall and you have to – the place handles those dramatic Atlantic storms brilliantly. I was there during one particularly wild February weekend, and watching the weather roll in from the warmth of the lounge was actually pretty spectacular.

The location works perfectly for exploring this bit of North Cornwall properly. Boscastle is maybe ten minutes down winding lanes (and yes, the lanes are proper narrow, so don’t bring anything too massive), while you can reach the coast path and some genuinely stunning cliff walks without fighting through crowds. Port Isaac’s not far either – about twenty minutes if you know the back roads, which the owners absolutely do and will happily point you toward. They’re locals, which shows in all those little recommendations you wouldn’t find in guidebooks. Best cream tea spots, which beaches work best when the wind’s coming from different directions, that sort of invaluable stuff.

I’ll be honest – this isn’t for everyone. If you want a pool, spa treatments, or room service, look elsewhere. But if you want to actually experience rural Cornwall rather than just tick boxes, and you appreciate places that feel genuine rather than manufactured, Tregrylls Barton delivers completely. The fact that it consistently gets top ratings isn’t surprising once you’ve stayed there. It’s one of those places that reminds you why Cornwall’s coast became so famous in the first place, before everyone else caught on.

We are big foodies and this house was incredible for putting on a feast and making things extra special. The kitchen is so well stocked for both cooking and serving.
The gardens and house are beautiful and so well maintained and presented. We had an amazing stay.
We surfed locally at both Polzeath and Trabarwith and walked around the coast path near Crackington – location is brilliant!

What could be improved: Lane access very narrow with overgrown brambles and branches. Lots of scratches on all the cars
