Hotel Description
You know what? I’ve walked past Tregenna Guest House on Melvill Road dozens of times over the years, and honestly, I always wondered what it was like inside. Well, after finally staying there last month, I can tell you it’s one of those places that gets everything right without making a big fuss about it. The Victorian townhouse sits on this lovely tree-lined street that’s actually perfectly positioned – you’re literally a five-minute walk from the town center and harbor, but far enough up the hill that you escape all the summer evening noise from the pubs down by Custom House Quay.
The moment you step inside, there’s this immediate sense that someone actually cares about this place. I mean, sure, it’s got that classic Cornish B&B feel with the original features and period details, but it’s been updated in all the right ways. The rooms – well, mine overlooked the back garden which was surprisingly quiet even during the busy August period – have this comfortable, lived-in quality without feeling dated. The bed was properly comfortable (you’d be surprised how many places get this wrong), and there’s actually decent water pressure in the shower, which is honestly a minor miracle in some of these older buildings. What really impressed me was the little touches: proper blackout curtains, a decent-sized wardrobe, and – this might sound silly – but hooks in the bathroom where you actually need them.
The breakfast situation is worth mentioning because it’s done in this bright conservatory space that catches the morning light beautifully. Nothing fancy, but everything’s clearly made with care, and they source locally where they can. The couple who run it, they’ve got that perfect balance of being helpful without hovering – they know Falmouth inside and out, so if you need restaurant recommendations or want to know which beaches are best when the wind’s up, they’re genuinely useful. Parking can be a bit tricky on Melvill Road itself (it’s permit parking during the day), but they’ve got a couple of spaces at the back, and honestly, once you’re settled in, you won’t need the car much anyway. The whole town’s walkable, and the coastal path is right there if you fancy a proper Cornish clifftop walk. That 9.2 rating they’ve got? Yeah, I can see why – it’s not trying to be something it’s not, just doing the fundamentals really well in a part of Falmouth that feels properly local rather than touristy.
