You know what struck me first about Towennan? The quiet. I mean, really quiet – the kind where you actually hear the waves from Gwithian Beach even though you’re tucked up on Prosper Hill. It’s this gorgeous four-bedroom apartment that honestly feels more like staying at a friend’s incredibly well-appointed seaside house than any typical holiday rental. The Red River Inn location might sound confusing on paper, but once you’re there, it makes perfect sense – you’re literally a few minutes’ walk from one of Cornwall’s best beaches, but far enough up the hill that you escape all the summer day-tripper chaos.
The apartment itself is proper spacious – four good-sized bedrooms that actually fit real furniture, not those cramped afterthoughts you sometimes get. What I loved was how lived-in it felt without being worn down, if that makes sense. The kitchen’s got everything you’d actually want to use (decent knives, proper coffee maker, enough wine glasses for a group), and the living areas have that relaxed coastal vibe without going overboard on the nautical theme. The views from the upper windows are something else – you can see right across to Godrevy lighthouse on clear days, and the sunsets… well, let’s just say you’ll find yourself timing dinner around them. Parking’s no issue either, which honestly is half the battle in these coastal villages during peak season.
Here’s the thing about staying in Gwithian – you’re perfectly positioned for both beach days and proper Cornwall exploring. The beach itself is a stunner, popular with surfers but big enough that you can always find a quiet spot. Plus you’re close enough to St. Ives (about 10 minutes by car) for those inevitable tourist moments, but far enough away that you’re not dealing with the crowds and parking nightmares. The local pub scene is pretty decent too – though fair warning, things do get lively during summer evenings, not that it ever felt intrusive from the apartment. I’d definitely book this place again, especially for a group or family holiday where you want space to spread out but still feel connected to proper Cornish coastal life. The 8.9 rating feels about right – it’s not perfect luxury, but it’s exactly what you want from a seaside escape: comfortable, authentic, and positioned just right for making the most of this beautiful stretch of coast.

Excellent location for exploring Southern Cornwall. Very spacious for our family of 5 and conveniently located above a pub. We ate here two out of three nights and really enjoyed it. Host was responsive and helpful.
What could be improved: It must have at one time been an Inn and each room has heavy fire doors that were very difficult for our young kids to open on their own. And very tricky to hold open with the few provided doorstops. The wifi was a bit spotty, even the cable TV was in the evenings. Lovely large apartment everything you needed was there. Very clean great facilities. Ideal spot to go in every direction.
