Hotel Description

I’ll be honest – when I first pulled up to Tolcarne Beach Colonial Restaurant and Rooms, I wasn’t expecting much from what looked like just another beachfront spot in Newquay. But you know what? Sometimes the places that don’t shout the loudest end up surprising you the most. This little gem sits right on Tolcarne Beach (obviously), and I mean literally steps from the sand – not that “short walk to beach” nonsense you usually get.

The colonial styling actually works here, which is rare because it can feel so forced. But there’s something genuine about how they’ve done it up, maybe because the building itself has that weathered coastal charm that you can’t fake. The restaurant downstairs gets busy during summer evenings – honestly, it’s one of those spots where locals actually eat, which tells you everything. I watched families from town mixing with tourists, and the buzz was real without being chaotic. The rooms upstairs are what really impressed me though. They’re not huge, but they’re thoughtfully done with proper attention to details like decent lighting (thank god) and windows that actually open to let in that sea air. You can hear the waves from most rooms, which sounds cliché but it’s genuinely lovely when you’re drifting off.

What makes this place special is its position on Tolcarne – it’s the quieter end of Newquay’s beach scene, away from the main Fistral madness but still close enough that you can walk to the town center in about ten minutes. The Gannel estuary is right there too, perfect for those low-tide walks that tourists never seem to know about. Parking can be tricky during peak season (there’s a small lot but it fills fast), though if you’re staying here you get priority which is actually huge in Newquay. The staff seem to genuinely know the area – they pointed me toward Island Beach for sunset photos, which was spot on advice. The 9.4 rating makes sense when you experience it; it’s not trying to be fancy, just doing everything really well. Sure, you might hear some kitchen noise if you’re in certain rooms during dinner service, but honestly, the trade-off of being right on the beach makes it worth it. This is the kind of place where you end up extending your stay because leaving feels premature – and trust me, in Newquay, that’s saying something.

It was very quiet at night, the view from the room was spectacular, uninterrupted view of the sea. Not too far into centre of Newquay, excellent staff, very friendly, accommodating, spotless room, lovely bath & shower, good quality towels etc etc. Newquay is the perfect place to use as a base to drive to all the other wonderful places like Padstow, St Ives, the Eden Project, all within 1/2 to 3/4 hours driving. & the restaurants round here are incredible, I recommend the Pig at Harylon Bay & Rick Steins seafood restaurant in Newquay near the Newquay GC.

What could be improved: When we arrived at Newquay the signposting to the hotel is non existent & had to phone the hotel to find out how to get to it. They need additional signage on the main road to point out the entrance to the hotel, if your your not a confident driver beware of the narrow windey road down to the hotel, I would suggest you park in their carpark which is only 1/2 way down the lane as it’s very very tight!!!!!!! We stayed in the room called “Halcyon” & although it was lovely & and incredible sea view, on a couple of mornings you could smell the cooking of the kitchens & it could be perceived as a bit off putting first thing in the morning.

Everything. So relaxing, outstanding location. Staff were exceptional. Was upgraded to the beach house (pet friendly) they provided us with dog bowls, a ball, treats. Breakfast was amazing in the colonial with a sea view. Could not fault this hotel.

Me and my partner went to this hotel to celebrate our wedding anniversary and when we turned up to the property it was clear it was very well looked after, it was so clean and immaculate. The staff were so friendly and really helpful to. We had breakfast both mornings of our stay and a meal in the restaurant, the food was incredible! We got cocktails when we got there to and these were also amazing. We also got to look in one of the self catering apartments which to our delight was just as amazing as the hotel room we stayed in, we will be planning to return and bring our little ones with us next time!
