You know those places where you pull up and immediately think “okay, this is going to be good”? That’s exactly what happened when I first drove through the gates at The Stables. I mean, the name tells you everything – this actually used to be working stables, and they’ve converted it into something pretty special without losing that authentic countryside feel. It’s tucked away in St Breock, which honestly most people drive right past on their way to Wadebridge, but that’s exactly why it works so well.

The thing about staying here is you get this perfect balance of being properly in Cornwall – like, you can hear the sheep in the neighboring fields and there’s zero light pollution at night – but you’re still only about ten minutes from Wadebridge if you need proper shops or a decent pub meal. The conversion work is really thoughtfully done too. They’ve kept all the original stone walls and wooden beams, but everything’s been updated with underfloor heating (which you’ll appreciate if you’re visiting outside summer) and these massive rainfall showers that actually have proper water pressure. The rooms feel spacious without being cavernous, and there’s this lovely courtyard area where you can sit with morning coffee and watch the barn swallows that nest in the eaves.

What really sold me on this place, though, is how they’ve managed to keep it feeling like a working farm rather than some sanitized country hotel experience. The owner actually lives on the property and you’ll probably bump into them feeding the chickens or tending to the vegetable garden that supplies the breakfast ingredients. Speaking of breakfast – they do this incredible thing with their own eggs and local bacon that’s cooked on an actual Aga, not some industrial kitchen setup. Plus, if you’re into walking, you’re literally on the Saints’ Way here, which is this ancient pilgrimage route that most tourists don’t know about. It runs right past the property and takes you through some gorgeous countryside down toward Padstow. The parking situation is brilliant too – proper spaces right outside your room, none of this hiking across gravel car parks with your luggage. Honestly, for a 4-star place, it feels more personal and authentic than half the 5-star properties I’ve stayed at. It’s the sort of place where you end up extending your stay because you realize you’ve found something genuinely special, not just Instagram-pretty.

  We had a fabulous stay. The location was very peaceful and well situated for local attractions. The property was beautiful, finished to a high standard and equipped with everything we needed for a very comfortable stay. Excellent attention to detail, flowers, biscuits, drink and a thoughtful welcome pack for the dog on arrival. A fully fenced garden was secure for the dog.

  The property was spacious, clean, smelt fresh, finished to a high standard, had some great home comforts and added little extras in the kitchen, which was really appreciated. The fully fenced garden was secure for the dogs, which really did make all the difference. The location was central, which was great to access lots of different places.
