Hotel Description
You know what struck me first about The Old Rectory Rose Cottage? The name is almost comically long, but honestly, it tells you everything you need to know. This isn’t some generic chain hotel – it’s actually a converted Victorian rectory that sits quietly in Jacobstow, and the moment you pull up (and yes, there’s genuinely plenty of parking, even if you’re traveling with multiple cars or something larger), you get why they kept the full historic name.
The location is sort of perfect if you’re planning to explore this stretch of North Cornwall properly. I mean, you’re about ten minutes from Widemouth Bay, which locals will tell you is one of the better surfing spots that doesn’t get completely overrun with tourists. Crackington Haven is the same distance the other way – honestly one of the most dramatic coastal walks you’ll find, especially if you catch it on a clear day when you can see the rock formations properly. What I really appreciated was having Bude close enough for proper restaurants and shops, but being tucked away enough that you’re not dealing with the summer crowds every time you step outside. The drive to Tintagel takes about twenty minutes, and while everyone does the King Arthur castle thing (which, fair enough, it’s pretty spectacular), the real gem is just wandering the village early in the morning before the tour buses arrive.
The cottage itself has that lived-in authenticity you don’t often find – it feels like someone’s carefully maintained family home rather than a hotel that’s trying too hard to be charming. The rooms have character without being fussy about it, and there’s actual space to spread out, which matters when you’ve been hiking the coastal path all day and need to dry out wet gear. Port Isaac is maybe thirty minutes if you want to do the Doc Martin pilgrimage (and the fish and chips at the Golden Lion are actually worth the drive), while Clovelly is a bit further but makes for a perfect day trip – just be prepared for the cobbled streets and bring comfortable shoes. What really sold me on staying here again was the quiet. You’re far enough from the A39 that you don’t get road noise, but close enough that getting around doesn’t become a production. And the owners clearly understand that people come here to explore – they’ve got all the local knowledge you’d want and don’t hover, which I always appreciate when I’m trying to plan my day over coffee.

Comfortable lounges and beds, plenty of space to move, kitchen well stocked with cutlery, crockery, pans etc. All the extras provided, tea, sugar, soap etc. Plenty for entertainment, wifi, tv, movies. Cottage was lovely, spacious and clean in a very pretty setting. We had a couple of queries and had a quick response from the owner.

1 On arrival, I managed to drive into the wrong entrance. Johnny came out and put me right and also handed me the key.
2, I couldn't work out how to control the shower. Johnny came the next day and showed me. He also fitted a new tap washer to the hand basin tap which was dripping.
Johnny was friendly, helpful and efficient.Freddie from United Kingdom – 3 May 2025 (8/10)
