Hotel Description
You know what’s funny about The Old Post Office in Camborne? I almost drove right past it the first time – it actually looks like, well, an old post office. But honestly, that’s part of its charm. This place has this wonderfully understated thing going on where they’ve kept all the character of the original Victorian building but somehow made it feel completely luxurious inside.
I mean, Camborne isn’t exactly where you’d expect to find a 4-star boutique hotel, right? It’s more known for its mining heritage and being a proper Cornish working town. But that’s actually what makes The Old Post Office so special – you get all the authenticity of staying somewhere real locals live and work, without sacrificing comfort. The location is brilliant if you’re exploring Cornwall properly; you’re about fifteen minutes from the coast at Portreath (gorgeous beach, by the way), and you can easily day-trip to St. Ives or even the Eden Project without dealing with touristy accommodation prices. Plus, parking is actually manageable here – try finding a decent parking spot in St. Ives during summer and you’ll appreciate this immediately.
The rooms are where they really got it right. Mine had these fantastic high ceilings with original moldings, but the bed was properly modern and comfortable, and the bathroom – well, let’s just say whoever designed it understood that people want both style and decent water pressure. There’s something about the way they’ve mixed old architectural details with contemporary touches that feels thoughtful rather than gimmicky. The staff genuinely seem to know the area too, which you don’t always get. When I asked about local walks, the woman at reception didn’t just hand me a generic leaflet – she actually drew on a map showing me the best route to avoid the boggy bits on the coastal path. Breakfast was excellent (proper Cornish ingredients, not the usual chain hotel stuff), and the whole place has this relaxed atmosphere where you feel like you can actually unwind. I stayed during a particularly wet October week, and while the weather was terrible, I found myself looking forward to coming back to the hotel each evening rather than feeling trapped indoors. That 9.3 rating makes complete sense once you’ve been there – it’s the kind of place that gets the details right without making a big fuss about it.
