Hotel Description

You know what struck me first about The Old Milking Parlour? The name actually makes sense when you see it – this genuinely used to be part of a working farm, and they’ve done something pretty remarkable with the conversion. It’s tucked away in Par, which honestly most people just drive through on their way to the Eden Project or Fowey, but that’s actually perfect because you get this incredibly peaceful spot without the tourist chaos.

The thing about staying here is that it feels like you’ve stumbled onto something special that the guidebooks haven’t quite caught up with yet. The owners clearly know what they’re doing – everything from check-in to the little touches in the rooms shows they’ve thought about what actually matters when you’re traveling. I mean, there’s proper thick towels, the WiFi actually works (which you can’t take for granted in Cornwall), and the beds are that perfect firmness where you don’t wake up feeling like you’ve been camping. The rooms have these lovely exposed beams and stone walls that remind you of the building’s history, but it’s not overdone in that twee way some conversions go for. They’ve managed to keep the character while making sure you’ve got all the modern stuff you need – decent shower pressure, plenty of plugs, and windows that actually open properly for that fresh Cornish air.

What really sets this place apart though is the location and how the hosts help you make the most of it. Par might not sound glamorous, but you’re literally minutes from some of the best bits of Cornwall that most visitors miss. The coast path is right there – you can walk to Charlestown (where they film all those period dramas) in about twenty minutes, and it’s a gorgeous walk along the cliffs. Plus you’re perfectly positioned for day trips without having to deal with the nightmare parking in places like St. Ives or Padstow. The hosts actually give you proper local recommendations too, not just the obvious tourist spots – they pointed me toward this incredible little pub in Tywardreath that I never would have found otherwise. Honestly, after staying in some pretty mediocre hotels around Cornwall where you’re paying premium prices for bog-standard rooms just because they’re near the beach, finding somewhere like this feels like discovering a secret. It’s got that rare combination of genuine character, proper comfort, and people who actually care about making your stay good rather than just processing bookings.
