Hotel Description

You know what struck me first about The Nook? It’s tucked away on Alexandra Road in a way that feels properly local – not touristy at all, honestly. I mean, you’re literally a three-minute walk from the harbor where all the fishing boats come in, but you’re not dealing with the crowds that swarm around the main drag. The self-serviced setup works brilliantly here because St Ives is small enough that you don’t actually need someone holding your hand to find the good stuff. Plus, there’s something refreshing about having your own space when you’ve been tramping around the coastal paths all day and just want to collapse without worrying about breakfast times or reception hours.

The accommodations themselves have this sort of understated comfort that grows on you. Nothing flashy, but everything works properly – which, let’s be honest, is what you really want after a long day exploring the Tate or getting sandy at Porthmeor Beach. The kitchenettes are actually functional (I’ve stayed in places where they give you a kettle and call it a kitchen), and there’s enough space to spread out your hiking gear without tripping over everything. What I really appreciated was how quiet it gets at night. Alexandra Road doesn’t get the late-night foot traffic from the pubs down by the wharf, so you can actually sleep with the windows open and just hear the gulls in the morning. The 4-star rating feels about right – it’s not trying to be fancy, but the details are sorted. Good shower pressure, reliable wifi, and – this matters more than you’d think – proper blackout curtains for those ridiculously early summer sunrises Cornwall throws at you.

Here’s the thing about location that the booking sites don’t really capture: you’re positioned perfectly for both the artsy St Ives experience and the practical stuff. Walk five minutes downhill and you’re at the Barbara Hepworth Museum or browsing the galleries around Back Road West. But you’re also close enough to the actual working parts of town – there’s a proper Co-op just up the road for supplies, and you can reach the coast path without having to navigate through the tourist bottleneck around the harbor. I found myself using The Nook as a genuine base rather than just a place to crash, which doesn’t always happen with self-catered places. The 8.2 rating makes sense when you factor in that it delivers exactly what it promises without any unpleasant surprises. It’s not going to wow you with luxury touches, but it won’t disappoint you either – and in a town where accommodation can be hit-or-miss depending on the season, that reliability is actually worth quite a bit.

Reviews

  • Marguerite from Ireland – 20 June 2025 (7/10)

Very clean? Good Kitchen, room was small but had everything we needed.

What could be improved: Location, not walkable from town unless you were in training for the previous 6 months!

  • Patrick from Australia – 19 June 2025 (7/10)

    Great facilities and communal kitchen

What could be improved: Bathroom was on the small side

  • Lyall from South Africa – 18 June 2025 (8/10)

  • Dawn from United Kingdom – 16 June 2025 (8/10)

Communal well equipped and thought out kitchen. Beds comfy. Good towels , very clean.

What could be improved: Could really do with a blackout blind in bedroom. The room was very hot.
A we had to help a family who were locked out and the emergency number given did not work. What if this had also been a gas leak or water leak! Made us think there was no one to get hold of.

  • Anthea from United Kingdom – 15 June 2025 (9/10)

    Very clean
    Had everything
    Liked door entry system
    Clean kitchen

What could be improved: Hill back to accommodation
Could do with more milk in room

  • Tracey from United Kingdom – 10 June 2025 (9/10)

the accommodation was within 8-10 minutes walking distance of the main town of St Ives. Everywhere was clean and the communal read quite spacious with a nice seating area outside. The kitchen was helpful as was the washing machine- although the drying function didnt work.

What could be improved: The room was very small – not enough space to open cases and the walls weren't sound proofed. The person in the room next door decided to have a telephone conversation at 2.30am in the morning and we could hear every word. All the doors are fire doors and so very noisy with automatic closing.

  • Jane from New Zealand – 10 June 2025 (9/10)

Very clean and comfortable. Kitchen facilities and washing machine on site were a real bonus. Smooth check in using code provided. Room was spacious.

  • Colin from United Kingdom – 28 May 2025 (8/10)

    Lovely clean and cosy room.

What could be improved: Sound proofing needs improving

  • John from United Kingdom – 20 May 2025 (8/10)

nice big bed , very clean room, rest of property also very clean and tidy, plenty of Parking. good location (St Ives is all up hill this is on one of the less steep ones)

What could be improved: Bathroom very small and narrow. but ok for a short stay. Wifi a bit slow compared to what we are used too but better than a lot of other places in this part of Cornwall.

  • Stefan from United Kingdom – 14 May 2025 (8/10)

What could be improved: Hard to find the house at night , dark area, had to ask locals. Some extra signs with lights would be better
