The Hayloft Overview
First Impressions
Honestly, I wasn’t expecting much when I first pulled up to The Hayloft in Lostwithiel — the name made me think rustic barn conversion, maybe a bit rough around the edges. But you know what? This four-star place completely changed my mind the moment I stepped inside. It’s one of those properties where someone clearly put real thought into every detail, and the 9.6 rating suddenly makes perfect sense.
Location & What’s Around
Lostwithiel itself is this charming little Cornish town that most people drive through without stopping, which is honestly their loss. The hotel sits in what locals call the perfect spot — close enough to the town center that you can walk to the decent pubs and that lovely little antique shop on Fore Street, but far enough out that you’re not dealing with any traffic noise. I mean, the recent guests rated the location a perfect 10.0, and after spending a few days there, I get it. You’re also about twenty minutes from the Eden Project if that’s on your list, and the coastal towns are all within easy reach.
The Room Experience
My room was actually much more spacious than I expected — these converted buildings can be hit or miss with space, but they’ve done something clever with the layout here. The bed was properly comfortable (none of that rock-hard nonsense you sometimes get), and there’s this lovely view out over the countryside that changes throughout the day. What I really appreciated was the attention to practical stuff — good lighting for reading, plenty of outlets where you actually need them, and a bathroom that doesn’t require contortionist skills to use the shower.
Dining & Amenities
The breakfast situation is solid — not fancy, but everything’s fresh and they actually know how to cook eggs properly, which is rarer than it should be. There’s a cozy restaurant area where you can grab dinner if you don’t feel like venturing out, though I’d recommend trying at least one of the local pubs for the full Cornwall experience. The free parking right on site is brilliant — you don’t realize how much of a relief that is until you’ve spent twenty minutes circling narrow Cornish streets looking for a spot elsewhere.
Why Guests Love It
Here’s the thing about The Hayloft — it’s particularly popular with couples, and I can see why. There’s something about the place that feels intimate without being overly romantic or stuffy. Maybe it’s the way the evening light hits the building, or how quiet it gets at night, but it definitely has that “let’s escape for the weekend” vibe. The staff seem to understand this too — they’re helpful without being intrusive, which is exactly what you want when you’re trying to unwind. It’s the sort of place where you find yourself staying an extra night just because leaving feels like too much effort.
