You know what struck me first about The Good Lodge? It’s one of those places that feels completely unpretentious despite being proper 4-star quality. I mean, you’re tucked away in Kilkhampton – which honestly most people just drive through on their way to Bude – but this place actually makes you want to slow down and stay put for a while.

The thing about this part of North Cornwall is that you’re getting all the coastal magic without the Padstow crowds and prices. The Good Lodge sits right in that sweet spot where you can walk to the village pub (The New Inn, if you’re wondering – decent pint and they know everyone’s name), but you’re also just a proper 10-minute drive to some absolutely stunning cliff walks along the coast path. The staff here actually know the area – not just the tourist bits, but like, which footpath has the best wildflowers in spring and where you can park near Coombe Valley without getting stuck behind a tractor. They’ll tell you honestly that yeah, the beach at Bude gets mental in August, but there’s this little cove just past Duckpool that hardly anyone bothers with.

The rooms themselves have that comfortable, lived-in quality that expensive places sometimes try too hard to fake. Everything works properly – the shower’s got actual pressure, the beds don’t squeak, and there’s enough plugs that you don’t have to choose between charging your phone and using the kettle. The breakfast is one of those properly good Cornish affairs where they’re not skimping on the local sausages, and the woman who runs it remembers how you like your eggs after the second day. What I really appreciated was the parking situation – sounds boring, I know, but try finding a decent spot in most coastal hotels and you’ll understand why having your own guaranteed space matters. It’s also surprisingly quiet for being on a main road; the building’s got thick enough walls that you’re not hearing every car heading to the coast at 6am. The whole place just feels like someone who actually cares about hospitality is running it, rather than a chain going through the motions. With a 9 out of 10 rating, it’s clearly not just me who thinks they’ve got it sorted – but honestly, the fact that it’s still relatively under the radar compared to the flashier spots down the coast is part of what makes it work so well.

  Great location and very comfortable base to explore area. Everything you could possibly need was at the lodge – plenty of everything available such as cups, cooking equipment etc.
