Hotel Description

You know what caught me off guard about The Cornwall Hotel? It’s actually tucked away on Pentewan Road in a way that makes you feel like you’ve discovered something special – not one of those places right on the main drag where tour buses idle outside. I mean, St Austell isn’t exactly a tourist hotspot compared to somewhere like Padstow, but that’s honestly part of the charm here. You’re close enough to pop down to Pentewan Beach (literally a five-minute drive) without dealing with the summer crowds that swarm the north coast.

The spa side of things is where this place really shines, and I’m not just talking about the usual hotel pool situation. They’ve got this whole lodge setup that feels more like you’re staying in a proper retreat than a standard hotel room. The staff actually seem to know what they’re doing with the treatments – I watched them turn away walk-ins because they were booked solid, which tells you something about the quality. What I really appreciated was how quiet everything stays, even when it’s busy. You’d think with families around (and there definitely are kids here during school holidays) it would get chaotic, but somehow the layout keeps things peaceful. Parking is straightforward too, which anyone who’s tried to navigate Cornwall in summer will appreciate.

Here’s the thing about the location that the booking sites don’t really capture – you’re perfectly positioned for day trips without being stuck in the middle of nowhere. The Eden Project is basically on your doorstep, maybe ten minutes by car, and you can actually see it from some of the rooms if you know where to look. Plus you’ve got the Saints Way walking trail practically starting from the hotel grounds, though honestly most guests seem more interested in the spa facilities than hiking. The restaurant does proper Cornish ingredients without being too precious about it, and their breakfast actually runs until a decent hour (none of this “kitchen closes at 9:30” nonsense). Check-in was smooth when I visited – they seem to have their systems sorted, though I’d imagine things get more hectic during Boardmasters week when everyone’s trying to avoid camping. It’s the kind of place that earns its 8.4 rating through consistency rather than flashy gestures, if that makes sense.

Reviews

  • Mandy from United Kingdom – 20 June 2025 (9/10)

Location and bear to other amenities

What could be improved: Would of liked to eat outside on the terrace for our evening meal as such a lovely day but were told no so we went elsewhere to eat

  • Sarah from United Kingdom – 18 June 2025 (9/10)

The hotel was in a gorgeous location, beautifully maintained, very clean and the staff were wonderful.

What could be improved: Unfortunately, the tennis courts were not in use and we were not aware of this until we arrived.

  • Jonathan from United Kingdom – 14 June 2025 (8/10)

The location is perfect for exploring Cornwall, especially Eden project, Polperro and Fowey. Nearby Charlestown has excellent restaurants at the Pier House and Springtime. Rooms were quiet (except for owl hoots) and had nice balconies.

What could be improved: The restaurant was pricey and food average. There is no wi fi in the rooms and phone reception is poor. The sausages at breakfast had no taste.

  • Ted from Canada – 9 June 2025 (8/10)

Pleasant and courteous check-in. Room was spacious and bright. Every employee met was helpful and respectful. Grounds beautifully kept. Even the rain couldn’t dampen the atmosphere.

What could be improved: Spent only one night there and everything experienced was fine. Would like to stay for a longer period next time to take better advantage of all the property has to offer.

  • Fairclough from United Kingdom – 8 June 2025 (8/10)

The hotel was in a good location not far from anywhere
    Very clean hotel great staff
    Good breakfast

What could be improved: Some of the rooms have open planned rooms so bathroom is in the bedroom no privacy would be better with some sort of screen

  • Vincent44 from United Kingdom – 7 June 2025 (9/10)

Rooms are big, good breakfast selection, spa facilities are great, plenty of parking, staff friendly

What could be improved: No lifts to the upper floors (difficult when moving luggage), needs a covered walkway from the hotel to spa

  • Lawes from United Kingdom – 29 May 2025 (8/10)

    Location and facilities are wonderful.
We enjoyed amazing weather, which is always the "icing on a delicious cake".

The staff are welcoming and didn't rush us, answering our questions with respect, no matter how "dumb" a question I asked.

What could be improved: Bring an ardent non-smoking/vaping couple, having to dodge clouds, "run the gauntlet", of smoke and sickly sweet vapour, beside the entrance was an off putting welcome.

Only to find that the staff were not able to enforce the no-smoking request on the narrow section of the verandah between the beautiful gardens, spatial customer verandah and amazing picturesque planting.

We would have preferred a more private separation between the neighbouring balconies of our's and other residents' bedrooms.

  • Lesley from United Kingdom – 28 May 2025 (7/10)

Generous clean rooms with swimming pool

What could be improved: Beginning to look a bit tired esp carpets. Breakfast was ok and no slippers with the robes which was odd as you had to go outside to get to the pool

  • Tonynrosie from United Kingdom – 25 May 2025 (8/10)

    Room was good.
    Quiet and comfortable.
    Food was very good.

  • Michael from United Kingdom – 22 May 2025 (8/10)

All good was excellent. Our room was extremely comfortable. The whole place was very welcoming

What could be improved: It was not made clear when booking that some rooms were a long way from the main facilities. Our room was 225 – as far away as possible ! There was no lift to the second floor, we had quite a lot of luggage. There were a lot of steps and a long corridor to reach our room. We had to do this walk several times a day – we are 74! From our room it was also a very long walk to the spa – from one end of the hotel to the other.
