Hotel Description
You know what? I had absolutely no idea what to expect when I first pulled up to The Corn Store on Ropers Walk. The name had me scratching my head, honestly – I mean, it’s tucked away in these converted barns that you’d drive right past if you weren’t looking for them. But that’s actually part of the charm. This place sits in Mount Hawke, which is basically this tiny village between Truro and the coast that most people zoom through on their way to Porthtowan beach (which, by the way, is only about ten minutes down the road).
The moment you step inside, it all makes sense. Someone’s taken these old agricultural buildings and turned them into something really special without trying too hard to impress you. The rooms have this perfect balance – they feel modern and comfortable but still honor the original stone walls and wooden beams. I stayed in October, so it was properly quiet, but I imagine summer gets busier with all the surfers heading to Porthtowan. The parking situation is actually decent, which matters more than you’d think when you’re hauling beach gear or just trying to unload after a long drive down the A30. What really struck me was how the staff seemed to genuinely know the area – not just the obvious tourist spots, but where to grab proper Cornish pasties in Truro or which coastal path routes won’t leave you dodging mountain bikers all afternoon.
Here’s the thing that sealed it for me: I woke up early one morning (jetlag, don’t ask) and wandered outside around 6 AM. The whole place was completely silent except for some sheep in the neighboring field, and you could actually see stars – proper stars, not the faint dots you get in most places. It’s that kind of location where you’re genuinely in the countryside but still close enough to civilization that you’re not stuck if you want a decent meal or need to pop into a shop. The 9.2 rating makes total sense when you consider they’re doing all the basics really well without any unnecessary fuss. Check-in was smooth, the room was spotless, and honestly, the bed was one of those that makes you consider what mattress they’re using. If you’re planning to explore both the coast and inland Cornwall – maybe hit up the Eden Project or Lost Gardens of Heligan – this is actually a smart base. Just don’t expect nightlife or room service; this is more about having a genuinely peaceful place to return to after your adventures.

Really well appointed, very comfortable property with all mod cons and facilities. Very clear instructions both before our stay and in situ ensuring our stay was hitch free. Appreciated various welcome gifts including top notch wine, luxury biscuits and milk. Thoughtful touches added to make our dog welcome too. Conveniently situated to explore Cornwall’s many wonderful opportunities. Set within a quiet location yet within short walking distance of a friendly village store and post office.

The Corn Store is a lovely, well equipped cottage and in a quiet location. There was plenty of space for the three of us and it was handy having two bathrooms. The kitchen had everything that you could need and Kathryn kindly left biscuits, wine and milk.

We enjoyed our stay especially as it was an exceptionally scenic and quiet spot. The facilities were very good. The welcome gifts were thoughtful & kind. Thanks.
What could be improved: A slight problem with the main shower. There was another shower room which was in good working order. The host was helpful in acknowledging it & said she'd chase it up with the electrician.Diane from United Kingdom – 14 August 2022 (8/10)
location was lovely and where we wanted to be
What could be improved: the outside area was round the back of the property and could have done with some easy sun chairs it was just a small bench and table and it was lovely weather and would have liked to have meals outside but not easy to get from the kitchen to the backJamie from United Kingdom – 23 July 2022 (9/10)
Loved this little cottage, perfect place to stay while we surfed and explored. It was so clean and the wine and biscuits were delicious and a lovely touch. 👍💫
What could be improved: Sadly the mattress is far too soft for me but everything else was ideal.
Oh there was a massive ants nest out the back by the table. Once they were disturbed they were everywhere.Anonymous from United Kingdom – 8 June 2025 (9/10)
The facilities were excellent everything you needed for a stay. Very clean and an ideal place as my mother who came with me has mobility issues and it was ideal with the lift etc. Nice welcoming gift and host available if needed for anything. Would definitely book again.
What could be improved: Only one thing was the softness of the beds. But that is just a personal preference as normally I have firm, but utilised the sofa bed which lovely so no real issue.Rob from United Kingdom – 4 September 2023 (10/10)
