Hotel Description
Honestly, I wasn’t expecting much when I first pulled up to The Beach Retreat in Charlestown – you know how some places with “retreat” in the name can be a bit pretentious? But this one actually lives up to it. The building sits right where you’d want it to, just a proper stone’s throw from the harbor where they filmed all those Poldark scenes (and yes, you’ll definitely recognize it). What struck me first was how quiet it gets in the evenings – none of that typical seaside tourist chaos you get in places like St. Ives during summer.
The rooms are what I’d call thoughtfully done rather than flashy. Mine overlooked the working harbor, and I mean actually overlooked it, not some distant glimpse through trees. You can watch the fishing boats heading out early morning if you’re up for it, though the double glazing means you won’t hear them unless you want to. The bathroom was one of those where someone clearly thought about what travelers actually need – proper water pressure, hooks in useful places, and a mirror that doesn’t fog up instantly. Small thing, but the bedside lights were actually bright enough to read by, which seems obvious but you’d be surprised how many places get that wrong.
What really sets this place apart though is how it sits in Charlestown itself. This isn’t some generic coastal town – it’s essentially a living film set with that Georgian harbor and the tall ships that are often moored there. But here’s the thing locals know: park at the Eden Project and walk down if you’re day-tripping, because finding a parking spot in the village itself can be properly frustrating in summer. The staff at The Beach Retreat seem to get this – they sorted parking for me without making a big deal of it. The breakfast was solid too, proper Cornish stuff alongside the usual options, and they actually knew where their ingredients came from when I asked. You can walk to the Shipwreck Museum in about two minutes, or if you fancy a proper meal out, the Rashleigh Inn just up the hill does excellent pub food (their fish pie is ridiculous). The coastal path is right there too – you can walk to Duporth Beach in one direction or toward Par Sands the other way, though honestly, Charlestown’s little beach is perfectly fine for a swim if the tide’s right. The whole place just feels like someone who actually travels put it together, rather than a committee trying to tick boxes. At 8.9 rating, it’s clearly doing something right, and after staying there, I get why people come back.

Location was fab. Quiet, peaceful, close to lovely beaches and other amenities.
What could be improved: The mattresses were not very comfy. It would have been a 10 out of 10 if they were.Karen from United Kingdom – 5 July 2024 (8/10)
The location was perfect and once you navigated the route very easy to reach the coast path and Charlestown. A well appointed property that was very comfortable and clean.
What could be improved: A trivial point but the fridge door was very annoying…maybe joining the two cupboard doors so they opened as one would help.Hilde from Norway – 28 May 2024 (8/10)
Spacious, clean, quiet. Perfect location by the sea, close to charlestown
What could be improved: It was really nothing to complain about!
