Hotel Description

You know what? I’ve stayed at plenty of farm conversions around Cornwall, but The Annex at Tregoddick Barn actually gets it right. This isn’t one of those places where they’ve slapped some rustic furniture in a draughty old building and called it boutique – someone clearly thought about what guests actually need here.

The location in Madron is honestly perfect if you want to escape the Penzance crowds but still be close enough to pop into town (it’s maybe a ten-minute drive down into the harbor area). What I really appreciated was how quiet it gets at night – you’re surrounded by proper farmland, so the only sounds are sheep and the occasional owl. The barn conversion feels authentic too, with those thick stone walls that keep things cool even on warm summer days. Check-in was refreshingly straightforward – none of that over-the-top hospitality theater you sometimes get at smaller places, just genuine friendliness from people who clearly know the area well.

The room itself had that perfect balance of character and comfort. Yes, there are exposed beams and original stonework, but the bed was actually comfortable (not always a given in these heritage buildings), and the bathroom was properly modern without feeling out of place. I mean, the shower pressure alone puts most London hotels to shame. What really impressed me though was the attention to small details – proper blackout curtains for those bright Cornish summer mornings, a decent coffee setup, and enough storage space that you don’t have to live out of your suitcase. The heating worked brilliantly too, which honestly matters more than you’d think in an old stone building, especially if you’re visiting in shoulder season.

Location-wise, you’re perfectly positioned for both the wild north coast and the gentler south – Lanyon Quoit is practically on your doorstep if you’re into ancient monuments, and you can reach Mousehole or St. Michael’s Mount in about fifteen minutes. The owners clearly know their stuff about local recommendations too. They pointed me toward this brilliant little farm shop near Gulval that I never would have found otherwise, and their suggestions for coastal walks were spot-on. Parking’s never an issue (which is more valuable than gold during peak summer in Cornwall), and you’re far enough from the main tourist routes that you won’t get stuck behind caravans every time you want to venture out. That 9.8 rating isn’t just politeness – this place genuinely delivers on what it promises without any of the usual holiday cottage compromises.

  • Richard from United Kingdom – 28 September 2024 (9/10)

Perfect location, so close to the coast, St Ives, Land's End, Minack Theatre, Penzance and The Lizard. Lovely clean rooms and fully equipped. The main bedroom was very comfortable and spacious. The bathroom and shower were great with lovely towels, heated towel rail and toiletries included. The biscuits and milk were a particularly welcoming touch! The host was very friendly and is always prepared to help or offer advice. Thank you for a wonderful 3 night stay.

What could be improved: It was a bit strange you couldn't access iplayer as this is normally free and available without any login or code required. We couldn't find the skylight window pole- perhaps state location of this in the folder of useful information. If you use the sofa bed in the living area, it can be quite noisy due to a surprisingly high number of vehicles rumbling past the window.
