Hotel Description

You know what? I wasn’t expecting much when I first pulled up to Talland Bay in Saint Cleer – honestly, the name had me thinking it was some generic seaside chain. But this place is actually tucked away in proper Cornwall countryside, and I mean tucked away. You’ll wind through these narrow lanes where you’re praying you don’t meet a tractor coming the other way, and then suddenly there it is. The setting alone makes you understand why it’s got that 9.5 rating – it’s perched right above Talland Bay itself, which if you haven’t been, is one of those small Cornish beaches that somehow escaped the tourist hordes.

The hotel feels like someone’s rather posh family home that they’ve decided to share with the world. I stayed in October (honestly the best time – still warm enough for walks but without the summer chaos), and the whole place has this relaxed confidence about it. The rooms are properly done up without being fussy – mine had this massive window overlooking the bay where I could watch the fishing boats heading out at dawn. Actually made me get up early, which never happens on holiday. The staff seem to genuinely live locally rather than being shipped in for the season, so they’ll tell you which path down to the beach is least muddy after rain, or where to park in Polperro when it’s heaving. Small things, but you know they matter when you’re actually trying to navigate Cornwall’s maze of single-track roads.

What really sold me on this place was dinner – they’re not trying to be some molecular gastronomy showcase, just doing really good food with obvious local connections. The fish was probably swimming that morning, and they’ve got this way of doing vegetables that makes you remember why you liked them as a kid. Plus the dining room looks straight out over the water, so you’re watching the light change while you eat. I mean, it’s a four-star place so it’s not exactly budget territory, but for what you get – the location, the genuine warmth, that feeling like you’ve discovered somewhere rather than just booked somewhere – it feels worth it. The parking’s easy enough (miracle in Cornwall), it’s quiet even when full, and if you’re one of those people who actually uses hotel spas, theirs overlooks the sea too. Just don’t expect to stumble upon it by accident – Saint Cleer isn’t on the way to anywhere, which is sort of the point.

The lodge smelt a bit musty on arrival, but after an airing all good. All the facilities were present in good working order and very clean throughout. Didn't meet any site staffs but I am sure they would have been available if needed. Pleasent location and very quiet and relaxing. Ideal location for visiting our family and site seeing. Will book again and recommend.

What could be improved: Information pack out of date, spent two days looking for the pub advertised only to find out it shut down before covid lol. Could do with a shop, though planning on my part was lacking. I'll know better next time. Bit hard to find the lodge in the dark ( I had to get out of the car to read the names to find the right one), but it was a small inconvenience .

What could be improved: Coming home….

    What could be improved: Nothing.

  • Melanie from United Kingdom – 18 February 2024 (9/10)

The accomodation was spotless. The lady who we got the key from was very friendly and informative.
It was about an hr from lost gardens of Helligan and half hr from Eden project. It's set in lovely soroundings. It had everything we needed.

What could be improved: The mattresses were very uncomfortable. You have to pay for WIFI even though booking.com says it's included.
I messaged several times before we went via booking.com. never got a reply. I called the number, was advised they would speak to the owner and get back to me, they never did.

  • Aimee from United Kingdom – 1 March 2025 (10/10)

The bungalow was clean and the location is just beautiful. The stream right outside the back door was so relaxing. Kitchen had everything we needed to cook our own food.

What could be improved: The mattress on the single bed wasn't the comfiest so took a little time to fall asleep, felt abit too springy. The WIFI costs but when I booked it stated WIFI was free. I paid the money for WIFI for a week but couldn't connect it to the TV so the "smart" TV was useless.

  • Andre from Netherlands – 12 July 2023 (8/10)

Mooi en schoon huisje. Veel ruimte.
    Rustig gelegen.

What could be improved: Geen verplaatsbare buiten stoelen. Waardoor je niet altijd in de zon kon zitten.
    Voor ons iets te rustig.
