Hotel Description

You know what struck me first about Talehay Cottages? The absolute quiet when you step out of your car. I mean, you’re literally in the middle of Cornish countryside here – Tremaine is this tiny hamlet that most people drive right through on their way to Looe without even noticing. But honestly, that’s exactly what makes this place so special.

The cottages themselves feel properly authentic, not like those sterile holiday lets you sometimes get. There’s this lived-in warmth to them that makes you want to immediately put the kettle on and settle in for the week. The owners have clearly put thought into the details – decent Wi-Fi (which, let’s be honest, can be hit or miss in rural Cornwall), really comfortable beds, and kitchens that are actually equipped for proper cooking, not just reheating supermarket meals. I was surprised by how spacious our cottage felt inside, with those thick stone walls that keep everything cool even on the hottest summer days. The only thing I’d mention is that if you’re traveling in winter, pack layers – these old buildings can take a while to warm up, though there’s something quite cozy about getting a fire going.

What really sold me on the location is how perfectly positioned you are for exploring this bit of Cornwall. Looe’s only about ten minutes down the winding lanes – and I actually prefer staying up here rather than in town itself, because you get all the charm without the summer crowds and seagulls nicking your pasties. Polperro’s an easy drive too, and if you’re into coastal walks, the South West Coast Path is practically on your doorstep. Local tip: there’s a brilliant farm shop about five minutes away in Pelynt village that does incredible Cornish cheese and local ales – much better than traipsing to the big Tesco in Looe. The parking situation is refreshingly straightforward too (you’ll appreciate this if you’ve ever tried to park in St. Ives during peak season). Check-in was relaxed and personal – none of that corporate hotel efficiency, but in a good way. The kind of place where the owners actually remember your name and ask how your day trip to the Eden Project went. That 9.6 rating isn’t just good luck – it’s because places like this understand that sometimes the best luxury is simply being left alone in a beautiful spot with everything you actually need.
