Hotel Description

Honestly, when I first pulled up to Surfside in Marazion, I wasn’t sure what to expect – the building looks understated from the road, almost like it’s trying to blend into the coastal landscape rather than shout about itself. But you know what? That’s actually perfect for this spot, because once you’re inside and looking out those windows at St. Michael’s Mount rising from the bay, you realize the view is doing all the talking.

The thing about Marazion that most people don’t get until they’re here is how the whole vibe changes with the tides. I mean, one minute you’re looking at this mystical island castle across the water, and six hours later there’s literally a cobblestone causeway you can walk across – it’s wild. The folks at Surfside clearly get this because they’ve positioned everything to make the most of that ever-changing panorama. My room faced south toward the Mount, and I found myself just… watching it throughout the day. The light shifts constantly, especially in the late afternoon when everything goes golden and the castle looks like something out of a fairy tale.

What I really appreciated was how they’ve managed to feel upscale without being stuffy about it. The common areas have this relaxed coastal elegance thing going on – think quality fabrics and local artwork rather than generic hotel chain vibes. Parking was straightforward (which, if you’ve driven around Cornwall’s narrow lanes, you’ll appreciate), and the staff actually seemed to know the area well. When I asked about avoiding the crowds at the Mount, the woman at reception gave me specific timing advice that was spot-on – go mid-morning on weekdays if you can, after the school groups but before the day-trippers arrive.

The location is honestly hard to beat if you’re planning to explore west Cornwall. Penzance is just a few minutes down the coast road, and you’re perfectly positioned for day trips to Land’s End or the Penwith moors. But here’s the thing – you might not want to leave much. There’s something addictive about sitting with a coffee in the morning, watching the mist lift off Mount’s Bay, or having a drink in the evening as the lights start twinkling across the water in Penzance. The beach right below is proper Cornwall too – golden sand when the tide’s out, rock pools to explore, and usually not too packed even in summer since most tourists head straight to the bigger beaches further west.

I’ll be honest, it’s not the cheapest option in the area, but for a proper 4-star experience with that view and location, it feels fair. The only minor gripe I had was that the room got quite warm on sunny afternoons – Cornwall doesn’t exactly require air conditioning most of the time, but when you get those still, bright days, it can get a bit stuffy. Small thing though, especially when you can just pop down to the beach for a quick cool-off. If you’re looking for somewhere that captures the best of coastal Cornwall without feeling like a generic seaside hotel, Surfside really delivers.

Thé property was lovely and clean, tidy and spacious. location is fantastic and as always is a great place to visit.

What could be improved: the patio door is difficult to open and close and I think the toilet was leaking slightly.

    Location

  • Tony from United Kingdom – 1 April 2023 (5/10)

The accommodation was nicely located with a great view of St Michael's Mount and close proximity of the beach. The accommodation was well laid out.

What could be improved: The property seriously needs some major maintenance. In November 2022, a lady left a review about the property where she commented on the wind blowing through the bottom of the patio doors. Well, this is still the same,in fact the wind whistles through the patio doors, the kitchen window where there is a gap between the frame and the sash which I had to stuff with kitchen towel (photos taken). It also came through the bathroom window. If we didn't have the heating on high most of the time, we would have been frozen. In fact, we decided to go home 2 days early.

  • Stefania from Italy – 28 June 2023 (9/10)

Una posizione perfetta, tutti i confort necessari, un bungalow delizioso

What could be improved: La pulizia adeguata ma non eccelsa, la presenza di una colonia di forbicine in casa
