Hotel Description
Honestly, when I first spotted Stone’s Throw Cottage tucked away on Polkirt Hill, I almost walked right past it – which is actually part of its charm. This isn’t one of those flashy hotels screaming for attention; it’s the kind of place locals probably wish they could keep secret from us tourists.
The cottage sits just far enough up the hill to give you those postcard views of Mevagissey’s harbor (you know, the ones where fishing boats look like toys), but close enough that you can practically roll out of bed and grab pasties from the bakery down by the quay. I mean, it really is a stone’s throw from everything – whoever named it wasn’t being clever, just accurate. The walk down to the harbor takes maybe three minutes if you’re dawdling, and there’s something quite lovely about hearing the gulls and boat engines from your window without being right in the thick of the harbor chaos. Parking can be a bit of a puzzle in Mevagissey (let’s be honest, the streets weren’t exactly designed for modern cars), but the cottage sorted that out better than most places I’ve stayed.
What really got me was how they’ve managed to keep that authentic Cornish cottage feel without making you suffer for it. The rooms actually have proper showers – not those dribbling things you sometimes get in historic properties – and the beds are genuinely comfortable, not just “charming.” There’s this attention to detail that feels personal rather than corporate; someone clearly cares about the little things, like having decent lighting for reading and enough plugs for your devices. The 9.5 rating makes perfect sense once you’ve been there a day or two. You start noticing things like how quiet it gets at night (even in summer when the village is buzzing), and how the morning light hits just right if you’re an early riser.
The staff – well, they know their stuff about the area without being pushy about it. Asked about coastal walks and got actual useful advice, not just the obvious tourist trail everyone knows about. They pointed me toward this brilliant little path that connects to the Saints Way, which I never would have found otherwise. It’s that kind of local knowledge that makes a difference when you’re trying to see Cornwall beyond the obvious spots. During peak season the village gets properly busy (especially weekends), but the cottage feels like a calm spot to retreat to when you’ve had your fill of crowds and ice cream shops. I’d definitely go back – and that’s saying something, because Cornwall has no shortage of places trying to capture this exact vibe.
