The four-star property sits right in the heart of Penzance, and honestly, the location couldn’t be better — I mean, you’re literally steps away from everything that makes this Cornish town special. The reception area has that refined coastal charm without being overly nautical (thank goodness, because some places really go overboard with the maritime theme). What struck me most was how the staff genuinely seemed to know the area inside and out, offering suggestions that felt personal rather than scripted.

Location & Neighborhood

Here’s the thing about Penzance — it’s perfectly positioned for exploring West Cornwall, and Starfish takes full advantage of this. You can walk to the harbor in minutes, catch the Scillonian ferry to the Isles of Scilly, or simply wander through the town’s mix of independent shops and galleries. The train station is close enough that you don’t need a taxi, but far enough that you won’t hear any noise. What I really appreciated was being able to stroll down to the promenade for sunset walks — something couples particularly seem to love here, and I can see why the hotel gets such high marks from romantic getaway seekers.

The Rooms

My room was thoughtfully designed with that contemporary coastal style that actually works. The bed was genuinely comfortable (not just hotel-speak comfortable), and the bathroom had proper water pressure — you know how hit-or-miss that can be in older buildings. The windows offered glimpses of Mount’s Bay, though I’d recommend asking about sea views when booking if that’s important to you. What impressed me most was the attention to detail: quality linens, decent lighting for reading, and enough storage space that I didn’t have to live out of my suitcase.

The restaurant focuses on local Cornish ingredients, which sounds cliché until you taste how fresh everything actually is. Breakfast was a proper affair — none of that continental nonsense — with locally sourced items that made getting up early worthwhile. In the evenings, the bar becomes a cozy spot where guests naturally end up chatting about their day’s adventures, whether that’s exploring St. Michael’s Mount or discovering hidden coves along the coast.
