Hotel Description

You know what caught me off guard about Stable Cottage? The name actually makes perfect sense once you’re there. This converted stable sits on West Lane in Delabole – and I mean really sits there, like it’s been part of the landscape forever. The stone walls have this weathered charm that screams authentic Cornwall, not some developer’s idea of what Cornwall should look like.

Honestly, Delabole isn’t where most tourists end up, which is exactly why this place works so well. You’re about ten minutes from the coast (Tintagel’s practically next door), but you get to stay somewhere that feels properly local. The cottage itself is surprisingly spacious – I was expecting something cramped and tourist-y given the whole “converted stable” thing, but whoever did the renovation actually knew what they were doing. The kitchen’s got everything you need if you want to cook, and there’s proper counter space, not just some token kitchenette. The bedroom’s upstairs with these lovely exposed beams that don’t give you a concussion every time you stand up – clearly they thought about actual human height when they did the conversion.

What I really appreciated was how quiet it gets at night. West Lane doesn’t get much traffic, so you actually hear the countryside doing its thing instead of cars rumbling past. Morning coffee on the little patio out back is honestly one of those simple pleasures that makes you remember why you wanted to get away in the first place. The whole setup feels like staying at a friend’s place rather than some sterile hotel room. Parking’s right there (no hunting around village streets with a rental car), and the check-in was refreshingly straightforward – none of that awkward “where do I even go” confusion you sometimes get with cottage rentals. The place clearly gets looked after well; everything’s clean and maintained without feeling overly fussy about it. If you’re planning to explore this bit of north Cornwall – and you should, because the coastal walks around here are spectacular – this is exactly the kind of base camp you want.

The heating and hot water system was very good. The welcome goodies were a lovely touch.

What could be improved: Lighting in the lounge at the kitchen end could have been a little brighter.

The property was beautiful, the lounge was very relaxing and homely feeling plus the outside space was perfect for an evening drink and space for our dog to walk around.

What could be improved: The property was perfect, there is nothing to not like about this place.

It was clean and the hosts left lots of food treats that were local items

What could be improved: There was no mention of the ladder to get to the upper floor. It was very hard for me to get up and down and I may not have this place had I known that it was so steep. Also, the furniture in the lounge was uncomfortable as the cushions would not stay on the couch and we would have to get up and push them back after sitting for 15 minutes or so. The bed in the main room had a mattress topper on it that didn't seem to fit and my husband and I both felt like we were falling off because it created an edge that when we were asleep made us feel like it was the edge of the bed. And the chairs in the kitchen didn't really fit the table and you couldn't get two people sitting next to each other to be able to get under the table, one of us had to sit back a bit. We also had a problem with being very cold in the lounge. There were no radiators in there and there was no wood for the fire because it was out of season. They provided games and lots of local treats like scones and jams. It was also very clean. For most people, it would be perfectly fine, we just found that it didn't quite match our needs.

Lovely cosy cottage- just right for 2 adults. Made a good base to explore surrounding area.

What could be improved: Bathroom was downstairs
Stairs were extremely steep and not suitable for young children/older adults.
