Hotel Description
You know what struck me first about Spring Cottage? The name actually undersells it completely. I mean, when you hear “cottage,” you’re probably picturing something quaint but maybe a bit cramped, right? Well, this place on West Street in Kilkhampton is definitely quaint – it’s got that proper Cornish charm down pat – but cramped it absolutely is not. The “hi-spec” part of the name? Yeah, they weren’t kidding around with that either.
I’ll be honest, Kilkhampton isn’t exactly a household name, even for people who know Cornwall pretty well. It’s this lovely little village about ten minutes inland from Bude (which you probably have heard of), and honestly, that’s part of what makes staying here so special. You get all the benefits of being near the coast – the beaches at Bude are genuinely spectacular, especially if you’re into surfing or just long walks – without the summer crowds that can make the beachfront towns feel a bit mental. West Street itself is one of those narrow Cornish lanes where you’ll definitely want to brush up on your reversing skills, but parking at the cottage is actually sorted, which is more of a relief than you might expect until you’ve tried finding a spot in peak season around here.
The cottage itself feels like someone took a traditional Cornish home and gave it the full luxury treatment without losing any of the character. The interiors are genuinely gorgeous – think exposed beams and original features, but with heating that actually works and a kitchen that makes you want to cook (even if you’re normally a takeaway person). I was particularly impressed with the bathrooms, actually – proper rainfall showers and none of that lukewarm water nonsense you sometimes get in period properties. The whole place just feels… well, expensive, but in a comfortable way rather than that “don’t touch anything” vibe some upmarket places have.
What really won me over, though, was how quiet it gets in the evenings. You’re close enough to the A39 that getting around North Cornwall is dead easy – Tintagel’s about twenty minutes, Padstow’s maybe forty – but far enough off the main drag that you actually get proper countryside silence at night. Well, countryside silence plus the occasional sheep, but that’s hardly a complaint. The village pub (The New Inn, if you’re wondering) is walkable and does surprisingly good food, though they can get busy on weekends so booking’s probably wise. There’s also a decent little shop for basics, which saves you having to drive into Bude every time you realize you’ve forgotten milk or whatever.
Look, with a 9.4 rating, you’re probably expecting me to say it’s perfect, and honestly? It’s pretty close. If I’m being picky, the WiFi can be a bit patchy upstairs (though maybe that’s not entirely a bad thing when you’re trying to actually relax), and the lane can get a bit hairy when the seasonal traffic picks up. But those are proper minor quibbles. This is the kind of place that makes you understand why people get obsessed with Cornwall – it’s got that perfect balance of feeling properly away from it all while still being civilized and comfortable.

Lovely, clean cottage. Local pub was exceptional, very welcoming, food lovely. Nice walk around the common – be warned, very steep in places but worth it for the views. Overall brilliant week.
What could be improved: Parking 2 cars on the inside of the wall was a squeeze but manageableTink from United Kingdom – 1 January 2024 (10/10)
