Hotel Description

You know what caught me off guard about So Tranquil? The name actually fits – and I say that as someone who’s pretty cynical about hotels that promise peace and quiet. This place sits right on the edge of Duporth Bay, literally a stone’s throw from the water (hence the cheeky address), and honestly, the sound of waves becomes this gentle white noise that follows you everywhere. I mean, you’re maybe 30 seconds from the beach, but it feels completely removed from the usual seaside chaos.

The location is pretty brilliant, actually. You’re tucked into this quiet corner of Cornwall where Duporth meets Charlestown – and if you’ve seen Poldark or any of those period dramas, you’ll recognize Charlestown immediately with its tall ships and Georgian harbor. But here’s the thing most people don’t realize: while everyone’s crowding into the main Charlestown harbor taking photos, you can slip down to Duporth Bay and have this lovely little cove mostly to yourself, especially in the mornings. The hotel’s positioned perfectly for this – close enough to walk into Charlestown for dinner (there’s a decent pub called The Rashleigh Arms about five minutes away), but far enough that you’re not dealing with tour bus noise at 8 AM. Parking’s actually included too, which is honestly a relief because finding a spot anywhere near Charlestown in summer can be a proper nightmare.

What really sold me on the place was the attention to detail that you only notice when you’re actually staying somewhere, not just passing through. The rooms – well, they’ve got this understated coastal thing going on without the usual seashell-and-anchor nonsense you get at most seaside hotels. Large windows that actually open (revolutionary concept, I know), and the beds are properly comfortable – firm enough that you’re not sinking into a marshmallow but soft enough that you’ll sleep well after a day of coastal walking. The 4-star rating feels about right; it’s polished and well-run without being stuffy. Check-in was smooth, staff actually seemed to know the area when I asked about hiking routes, and the whole place has this relaxed vibe that suggests they’re confident in what they’re offering rather than trying too hard to impress. That 9.2 rating makes sense once you’ve been there – it’s one of those places where the small things work properly, from decent water pressure to blackout curtains that actually block light. If you’re looking for a proper base to explore this stretch of Cornwall without the premium you’d pay for St. Ives or Padstow, So Tranquil delivers exactly what it promises.

Well equipped and very well presented.
    Great hosts

The location of So Tranquil is so tucked away, it’s a beautiful space of calm. The little space at the back is so lovely for lounging and reading, listening to nature and the non slip decking is a bonus with an excited teen wanting the hot tub!!

Shower is excellent, I loved that. It’s a real holiday space, I love the Mediterranean feel of the apartment, it reminded me of holidays in Spain as a child, lovely.

So much space in the kitchen and the little porch area is great for hanging clothes on the drying rack provided, shoes, a quick change, good space.

The beach is lovely at high and low tide and Sue really helpfully provides the tide times on a little board. Loads of local information here too. We walked a lot and any way you choose to go you’ll not be disappointed with the surroundings. Brilliant location.

Sue was there when we arrived, and she’s absolutely lovely. Welcoming and so helpful. Darren is really a good host and both are careful to ensure guest’s privacy within what is practical, after all, they live on site! That this is in part their home too is obvious and I liked that, they were on hand to change a light bulb and just really help out if needed. They really care, it just made the stay that much nicer.

What could be improved: The boiler was a bit noisy but after day two I wasn’t bothered. I liked getting up to enjoy the peace of the outside space and the TV (I don’t have a tv at home!). We were lucky with the weather but the summerhouse made a great space to be dry and still looking out to the glorious leafy view. When I mentioned it I know that Sue will try to resolve it if it’s a further issue, they are like that, improving the space more as they progress. There is actually nothing to dislike for us here, the best break my son and I have shared and So Tranquil is actually just that.

  • Suzy from United Kingdom – 12 May 2023 (10/10)

Just glorious! Lovely clean space, attached to the hosts own home, so any issues they are there in a flash. Hot tub is excellent, with a lovely little garden and summer house. Private beach access was a bonus too, just a short walk from the house. Will definitely be back!

What could be improved: A gate would be a great addition to cover the side view of house from the garden and hottub. As it's right by the outside furniture, just hiding the bits kept down there would elevate the whole thing.

Shelf needed in bathroom for toothbrushes and contact lenses etc. Small detail but as 2 people who wear contact lenses there is not enough space to sit it all on the sink or it has to go on top of the toilet.

A very attractive and well equipped property, the highlight was the hottub which we enjoyed very much and helped post sailing aches. The care and attention visible throughout the property was lovely and the hosts were most helpful. Even a hedgehog to greet us on returning one night.

  • David from United Kingdom – 11 August 2022 (9/10)

Very clean and well equiped accomadation. Great base to explore the area. Private beach was a bonus as is very secluded and never crowded. Charlestown is a 5 minute walk away and the bus stop is 2 minute walk and is an excellent cheap way to explore the area. Oweners very helpful and attentive.

What could be improved: Nothing to dislike

  • Elaine from United Kingdom – 1 July 2022 (10/10)

Beautiful location, peaceful and very ‘tranquil’.
The property was compact and extremely well equipped. The bed was exceptionally comfortable.
The owners, Sue & Darren keep the property in excellent condition and immaculately clean. They were helpful and available at all times to answer questions or sort any little problems we encountered.

  • Nargiz from United Kingdom – 9 April 2024 (8/10)

We really liked our stay at So Tranquil. The accomodation is located very near the private beach, Charlestown harbour and the shops. The apartment had everything we needed and finishing the day in the hot tub was lovely! Thank you.

What could be improved: The boiler was rather noisy.
