Hotel Description
You know what struck me first about Slate Cottage? It’s not actually in some bustling town center where you’re fighting for parking – it’s tucked away in Helland, which is basically this quiet pocket of Cornwall that most tourists completely miss. I mean, you’re still only about ten minutes from Bodmin if you need proper shops or a decent pub meal, but there’s something really lovely about staying somewhere that feels genuinely off the beaten path.
The cottage itself has that solid, no-nonsense charm that you get with proper Cornish stone buildings. None of that twee, over-decorated stuff you sometimes see – just good bones and thoughtful touches. The rooms are honestly more spacious than I expected, and whoever did the renovation clearly understood that people want modern comfort without losing the character. The heating actually works (trust me, this matters in Cornwall, even in summer), and the WiFi is surprisingly reliable for somewhere this rural. I spent a fair bit of time working from the kitchen table one morning, looking out at fields that seemed to go on forever, and it was honestly one of those moments where you remember why you wanted to escape the city in the first place.
What really sets this place apart though is the location – you’re positioned perfectly for exploring Cornwall without dealing with the madness of the coast roads in peak season. St. Austell and the Eden Project are maybe twenty minutes away, but you can also head north toward Tintagel or west to the proper wild bits around Bodmin Moor. There’s decent parking right there (no hunting around narrow village streets), and the cottage sits far enough back from any road that the only sounds you’ll hear are sheep and the occasional tractor. Check-in was refreshingly straightforward too – none of that awkward waiting around or complicated key collection. The whole experience just felt… well, easy. Which honestly is exactly what you want when you’re trying to unwind. It’s the sort of place where you arrive planning to explore every day and end up spending half your time just sitting in the garden with a cup of tea, watching the light change across the fields.

Location was excellent for exploring Cornwall
What could be improved: Wi-fi access was a problem. We were unable to differentiate b/w the upper and lower case letters, therefore, no internet access for usRichard from United Kingdom – 10 September 2024 (9/10)

What could be improved: lighting could be better for kitchen & reading.need bottle opener for corks.Filipa from United Kingdom – 14 June 2024 (9/10)
The cottage had almost everything we needed. We just couldn't find chopping boards when preparing a meal. Everything else was good, a nice treat on arrival and very good communication from the owner.
What could be improved: Found some hairs on the bedroom floor. The downstairs lights were a bit dim for when cooking.Molly from United Kingdom – 28 August 2023 (10/10)
Beautiful cottage, comfortable and in the middle of everything for easy travel.
What could be improved: The only thing I can say is probably not enough storage for food but that is it.Elaine from United Kingdom – 10 June 2024 (9/10)
All the little personal touches that made it very homely
What could be improved: Wasn’t keen on soft bed but realise you can’t please everyoneShabia from United Kingdom – 21 August 2023 (8/10)
The hosts were very welcoming. They left us a bag of popcorn, sweets some delicious scones and jam for the for us to enjoy. We loved the little cottage. There was a dvd player with a choice of DVDs to watch to keep us entertained in the evening, as well as games to play.
We loved the brochures and leaflets in the magazine rack, which was very helpful and informative. The beds were comfortable. Overall the cottage was very lovely in a great location.
What could be improved: There were some sort of bugs under the carpet downstairs that kept appearing in the evenings. We swept them away, but they continued to come out during the evenings.
Other than that it was a lovely comfortable place to stay. And the hosts were very kind, thoughtful and welcoming.H from United Kingdom – 14 October 2022 (8/10)
peaceful rural location
homely feel
nice decor & style
had a dishwasher
easy access to towns, coast, and main roads
was clean and fresh
allocated parking space
the cottage is small but has a spacious feel
What could be improved: Not much we didn't like really, just the memory foam mattress was only 2 years old but I could feel the shape of previous guests in the memory foam, but this is a frequent problem with these type of mattressesJean from United Kingdom – 18 February 2023 (8/10)
Very good location. We choose this location so we could do some day trips in different parts of Cornwall. Cosy and full of character cottage, warm and pleasant when arrived.
What could be improved: Another wardrobe with shelves would be great.
Also a mat for shoes at the entrance would be a bonus.
Single bed is making noise at every single move.
Soft mattress is not our type but maybe other guests enjoy that.Emma from United Kingdom – 14 July 2023 (5/10)
