Hotel Description

You know what? I wasn’t expecting much when I first pulled up to Shorething on Hillside Villas – I mean, the name alone made me think it might be some cheesy seaside gimmick. But honestly, this place completely won me over from the moment I walked through the door.

The thing about Saint Martin is that it’s got this perfect balance where you’re close enough to hear the waves but tucked away from the tourist chaos that hits the main coastal roads during summer. Shorething sits on this lovely hillside spot where you actually get these incredible views without dealing with the crowds or the inflated prices you’d find closer to the harbor. The parking situation is refreshingly straightforward too – none of that nightmare you get in the village center where you’re circling for twenty minutes just to find a spot that costs more than your dinner.

What really struck me about this place is how they’ve managed to feel genuinely local without trying too hard. The staff actually knows the area – like, really knows it. They’ll tell you about the coastal path that starts just behind the old church (about a ten-minute walk down the hill) or point you toward that little bakery on Fore Street that locals queue up at but tourists somehow never find. The rooms have this comfortable, lived-in quality that makes you feel like you’re staying at a well-traveled friend’s place rather than some sterile hotel chain. I loved the little touches – proper thick curtains that actually block out the morning light, and windows that open wide enough to let in that salty Cornwall breeze without the room turning into a wind tunnel.

The breakfast room overlooks the valley, and there’s something really satisfying about starting your day watching the mist lift off the fields while you’re planning whether to head down to the coast or explore some of the inland villages. I’ll be honest, the wi-fi can be a bit patchy in some corners of the building – but that’s sort of the point, isn’t it? You’re in Cornwall, not a business center. What impressed me most was how quiet it stays even during peak season. You’d think being on a hillside you might get road noise, but the positioning is just right – you get the views without the distraction.

If you’re the type who needs to be right in the thick of things, this might not be your spot. But if you want somewhere that feels authentically Cornish, where you can actually relax and use it as a proper base for exploring the area, Shorething delivers in ways that surprised me. The whole experience just felt… right, you know? Like they understand what people actually want when they come to this part of the world.
