Hotel Description

I’ll be honest – when I first heard “Shepherds Hut” I was expecting some rustic barn conversion that would have me sleeping on hay bales. But this place in Lostwithiel actually surprised me in the best way possible. You know what struck me first? The attention to detail without trying too hard to be Instagram-perfect. It’s got that cozy, lived-in feel that makes you want to kick off your shoes immediately.

Lostwithiel itself is one of those Cornish gems that most people drive straight through on their way to the coast – which honestly works in your favor because it stays refreshingly quiet. The town’s got this lovely medieval charm (it was actually Cornwall’s ancient capital, though don’t ask me to pronounce half the street names). What I really appreciated was how walkable everything is from the hut. You can stroll down to Quay Street for a proper Cornish pasty, and there’s this little independent bookshop that I kept meaning to browse but never quite made it to because, well, the hut was just too comfortable to leave.

The accommodation itself hits that sweet spot between quirky and actually functional. I mean, shepherd’s huts can go either way – some are all style and no substance, cramped spaces where you’re bumping your head every five minutes. This one’s different though. The bed’s genuinely comfortable (not just “charming rustic” comfortable), and whoever designed the layout actually thought about how real people move around a space. The little kitchenette has everything you’d actually use, not just decorative copper pots that look pretty but cook nothing. There’s proper storage too, which sounds boring but trust me, after a few days of living out of a suitcase you’ll appreciate having somewhere to put your things. The only minor gripe – and it’s really minor – is that the shower pressure could be a bit stronger, but honestly, after spending your days exploring the Eden Project or wandering around the lost gardens of Heligan, you’re usually too tired to care much about power showers anyway.

What really won me over was the quiet. Proper quiet, not city quiet where you can still hear traffic humming in the distance. Just birds, maybe the occasional sheep doing whatever sheep do, and that’s it. Perfect if you’re trying to decompress from London life or just need somewhere to actually finish that book you’ve been carrying around for months. The 8.2 rating feels about right – it’s not trying to be the Ritz (and charging accordingly), but it delivers exactly what it promises with a bit of extra charm thrown in for good measure.

Quiet, cosy, basic but had everything we needed – even convinced us to get our own air fryer, which was very useful (and having never used one before). Animals on the farm. My dog loved running around the huge field. Amazing cakes on arrival!

What could be improved: One of the windows was a bit sticky, but apart from that, everything was great!

Peace and quiet. Great location, beautiful area to stay in. Hosts were very helpful and friendly.

What could be improved: Weather, but you can't do a lot about that.

If you want to enjoy the nature without forgoing the luxery of self-catering, this is the place for you. The lovely beautifully furnisings are also worth mentioning! All kitchen necessities (appliances) and untensils are provided!!!
If you have nice weather (like we did) then our dream vacation is complete! The host is also warm and helpful, spoiling you with sweets and basic provisions, including the fridge! We will definitely be back; it is highly recommended! Thanks a lot to Vicky.

    What could be improved: Nothing

  • Wilson from United Kingdom – 1 July 2023 (9/10)

It was quiet and peaceful, and considering it's a working farm, all very relaxed. But then it is Cornwall!
The bed was really comfortable and the shower was always hot.

What could be improved: Nothing negative to say.

    EVERYTHING.
Most Comfortable bed I have EVER slept in..
Homemade biscuits on arrival made in heaven they where that tasty 😋 I even asked for extras and was told "yes".
Lovely hot shower at the end of the day.
All the mod cons you need .. I'm used to camping but this just knocked it out of the park..
    I would HIGHLY recommend 👌 👍🏻
Extra towels on hand if needed .. Extra tea towels if needed..
You didn't really want for nothing.
I would advise setting a second alarm for the morning because the bed is sooooo comfortable you might not want to get up lol 😆
Spot on. Thank you very much for a pleasant stay 😊

  • Nicholas from United Kingdom – 9 June 2025 (4/10)

The views, the location, the home made cake by owners, comfy bed. Clean towels, plenty of crockery and cleaning materials. Peace and quiet. Parking by the hut. The table and chairs to sit in the sun on the deck.

What could be improved: The very, very, very low water pressure and then no water. No hot or cold

water at all in bathroom hut. That, after staying only one night we had to leave, because of the lack of water. No toaster, but air fryer. The door to the hut didn't lock, the inches of water in the double glazing. The noisy fridge during the night .
