Look, I’ve stayed in plenty of places around Cornwall, but this spot in Newlyn actually surprised me. The Shan Mu Inn sits right on Chywoone Hill – and honestly, when you first pull up to the white house, you might think you’ve got the wrong address because it doesn’t look like your typical hotel setup. It’s more like someone’s gorgeous home that they’ve opened up to travelers, which is exactly what makes it work so well.
The whole “entire flat” thing isn’t just marketing speak – you really do get this proper two-bedroom space that feels lived-in rather than sterile. But here’s what got me: that terrace sea view they mention? Yeah, it’s legit. I mean, you’re looking out over Mount’s Bay, and on clear mornings you can actually see St. Michael’s Mount sitting there like something out of a postcard. The terrace itself is where I ended up spending most evenings with a cup of tea (or something stronger), watching the fishing boats come back into Newlyn harbor below. You know what’s funny? The sound of the harbor carries up the hill, but it’s not annoying – sort of comforting, actually, especially if you’re used to city noise.
Newlyn gets overlooked by most tourists who rush straight to St. Ives or Penzance, which honestly works in your favor here. You’re literally a five-minute walk down to the harbor where you can buy fish straight off the boats – and I’m talking properly fresh stuff that was swimming that morning. The Tolcarne Inn down the hill does excellent pub food if you can’t be bothered cooking (though the flat’s kitchen is perfectly decent). Parking can be a bit tight on the hill, but there’s usually space if you’re not precious about squeezing into narrow spots. The 8.8 rating makes sense once you’ve been there – it’s not fancy in a hotel chain way, but everything works, it’s spotlessly clean, and the views alone justify the four stars. Plus, you’re close enough to walk into Penzance when you want proper shops and restaurants, but far enough out that you actually feel like you’re experiencing Cornwall rather than just visiting it.

Lovely location with excellent sea views. Long walk up hill but worth it. Interior of apartment had everything you could need and plenty of space and light
What could be improved: Instructions for accessing property poor. There were several entrances and no indication which was the intended front door. We spent over an hour trying to get in. Tried to phone owner but only got voicemail, very frustrating. Luckily it was a sunny pleasant day so sitting outside was ok, pity it was so stressful.

Lovely bright and clean apartment with nice touches like chocolate and milk in the fridge 🙂 The novelty towels made us smile! Great views of the harbour and everything you'd need for a short stay. Nice bathroom with good shower and roll top bath.
What could be improved: We found it really hard to find!! They gave us detailed instructions but there was no sign and we couldn't see some of the landmarks they'd given … perhaps they've changed? So would suggest maybe a sign with the name on the apartment would help. There was some building construction going on next door which may have affected the directions.
