You know what caught me off guard about Shan Mu Inn? The name doesn’t really prepare you for what you’re walking into. I mean, when you’re winding up Chywoone Hill in Newlyn – and honestly, it’s a proper climb from the harbor – you’re not expecting to find this gem tucked away with sweeping views across Mount’s Bay. But there it is, this deluxe apartment that’s actually earned its 4-star rating without all the usual corporate nonsense.
The hot tub situation is honestly the star here. Picture this: you’re soaking in bubbling water while watching fishing boats head out from Newlyn harbor below, and on clear days (which happen more than you’d think in Cornwall), you can see all the way to St. Michael’s Mount. The apartment itself feels more like staying at a well-traveled friend’s place than a hotel – everything’s thoughtfully done without being precious about it. The kitchen’s actually functional if you want to cook up some of that fresh fish from the market down in Newlyn, and the living space flows naturally toward those floor-to-ceiling windows that frame the seascape. I spent way too much time just watching the light change over the water, especially during those long summer evenings when the sun doesn’t set until after 9.
What really sells this place, though, is how it sits in the landscape. Newlyn’s still a proper working fishing port – you’ll hear the boats early morning, which I actually loved – and you’re close enough to walk down for the freshest crab sandwiches at one of the harbor cafés, but far enough up the hill to feel removed from it all. The owners clearly know this area; there’s local art on the walls and they’ve positioned everything to make the most of that view. Parking’s sorted (crucial when you’re this far up the hill), and honestly, once you’re settled in with a glass of wine in that hot tub watching the sunset, you’ll understand why this place scores a 9 out of 10. It’s not flashy or over-designed – it just gets everything right in that effortless way that makes you want to extend your stay.

Perfect place to stay, hidden away and very quiet. It has a high finish and everything is laid out well. It was lovely and clean and felt welcoming on arrival. Lots of heaters and dehumidifiers dotted around to help make the place be how you would like it. The jacuzzi spa is lovely, a large bath in the on suite and large shower. A large kitchen and island and seating area. The hanging chair is a lovely place to relax. Fluffy towels, good quality and two bathrobes provided in one room. Biscuits, milk and cold water awaited our arrival. We found the cutlery in the design of the kitchen under the hob in a drawer within a drawer. Good directions sent in advance, however we still struggled to find the entrance, it looks like you are going down a track. But easy to find apart from this! Whilst some “what I didn’t like” comments follow, we would recommend this property and would visit again!
What could be improved: The crockery lets the high quality of everything else down. Only two large breakfast bowls, mismatching crockery and some chipped plates. These don’t reflect the high end finish. The welcome booklet could do with more information, we worked out the jacuzzi but instructions would have been useful. Maybe a sign further down the lane to help navigate the way in. The en-suite toilet door is glass, you can lie in bed and see the toilet!James from United Kingdom – 30 September 2024 (9/10)

The property was beautiful inside and out, Spacious, clean and homely. The views were breathtaking and in a good location with lots to do nearby. The owner had brilliant communication and left us some lovely welcome presents knowing we were getting married which was really sweet. We would definitely stay again and miss it already. We were so pleased we chose to stay here for our wedding and honeymoon.
