Hotel Description
So I stumbled across Sand Bar – Mount Brioni completely by accident while driving through Downderry, and honestly? Best wrong turn I’ve ever made. This place sits right on Looe Hill with these absolutely stunning views over the coast – you know those mornings when the mist rolls in from the sea and everything looks like a painting? Yeah, that’s your breakfast view every single day here.
The thing about this area is that most tourists rush straight to Looe or Plymouth and totally miss this quieter stretch of Cornwall. Which is actually perfect because it means you get all the dramatic coastline without fighting crowds for a decent photo. The hotel itself feels more like staying at a really well-connected friend’s place than some stuffy five-star property. I mean, it’s definitely luxurious – the rooms are gorgeous and everything works perfectly – but there’s this relaxed vibe that you don’t always get at places with this kind of rating. The staff genuinely seem to love living here, and you can tell because they’ll chat about the best time to catch the tide pools or where to grab proper Cornish pasties (not the tourist traps in town, trust me).
What really got me was how quiet it is at night. No traffic noise, just the sound of waves hitting the rocks below. During the day though, you’re only about a ten-minute walk down to the beach, and if you’re feeling ambitious, the coastal path toward Seaton is absolutely incredible – especially in late afternoon when the light hits those red cliffs just right. Parking’s actually decent too, which anyone who’s tried to drive around Cornwall in summer will appreciate. The breakfast situation is spot-on as well – they source a lot locally, and you can taste the difference. I spent way too much time lingering over coffee just watching the boats come and go. Check-in was refreshingly straightforward, none of that stuffy ceremony you sometimes get at five-star places. They just sorted me out and pointed out the best spots to catch sunset. Honestly, with a 9.3 rating, I was expecting maybe a bit of hype, but this place actually delivers. It’s one of those rare finds where you immediately start planning your return visit before you’ve even checked out.

A wonderful place, lovely hosts. Jackie and John welcomed us very warmly. We felt as if we had known each other forever. Always helpful. The apartment has everything you need during your stay. It was very clean and cozy and very quiet. The perfect place to rest and recharge your batteries. The views from the window and the sound of the waves is lovely. Nearby pub and restaurants. Phenomenal places to walk and a stone's throw away from great attractions such as Looe and Plymouth. When there is an opportunity, we will definitely come back. Best regards to Jackie and John and thank you for everything 🙂
