The moment you step inside, you realize this isn’t your standard St Ives lodging — there’s something genuinely homey about the place that makes you want to kick off your shoes and settle in. I mean, the name gives it away really, but the cottage atmosphere is authentic rather than forced, which honestly surprised me given how many places try too hard with the “quaint” factor.

Location & Neighborhood

Here’s what I love about the location — you’re right in the heart of St Ives without being stuck in the tourist chaos that hits the harbor area during peak season. Academy Place sits in what locals know is the sweet spot, close enough that you can wander down to the galleries and beaches in minutes, but far enough up the hill that you actually get some peace in the evenings. The couples who stay here consistently rave about the location, and I get it — there’s something romantic about having your own little corner of this artistic town. You know what’s brilliant? You can slip out for morning coffee before the day-trippers arrive and really experience St Ives like it’s meant to be experienced.

The Space

The cottage itself strikes that tricky balance between character and comfort that so many places get wrong. You’ve got original features that feel authentic — none of that fake-rustic nonsense — but everything actually works properly, which matters more than you’d think when you’re trying to relax. The rooms have this lived-in quality that makes you feel like you belong there, rather than like you’re camping out in someone’s showroom. What impressed me most was the attention to small details that actually matter to travelers — proper lighting for reading, surfaces where you can actually put your things, that sort of practical thoughtfulness.

Getting Around St Ives

From Saffron Cottage, the whole town unfolds below you in the most satisfying way. The Tate St Ives is practically on your doorstep, and you can meander down through the winding streets to Porthmeor Beach without fighting through the crowds that clog up the main routes. I found myself taking different paths each day — one morning cutting through the old town to the harbor, another day wandering along the coastal path that picks up just minutes from the cottage. The bus connections to other parts of Cornwall work well from here too, though honestly, St Ives has enough to keep you busy for days.

  Lovely location, no parking which we knew. Local car park was fairly close and not expensive. House was cosy. Great shower 👍
  
  What could be improved: Felt that 1 toilet roll for 4 people over 3 nights was a bit stingy. Surprised to find the vacuum cleaner in one of the bedrooms on arrival? A lot of cobwebs in the lounge above the door to the boiler cupboard. Looks like they’ve been there for quite some time.

  The rooms were very cosy. The outdoor space was very nice for having breakfast in. Everything is beautifully decorated. We liked that the TV had a few apps so that you could play films on quieter evenings.
  
  What could be improved: Two small practical things:
  
  – There isn’t anywhere to hang multiple wet towels or clothes to dry. As the washing machine is provided it would be good to have a washing line outside and/or a clothes rack. It would be good to have somewhere to hang multiple wet towels that isn’t a clothes hook on the back of bedroom doors.
  – There isn’t a draining or drying rack for kitchen ware. The side can get wet easily. Would be good if this is provided.

  Information booklet left was really helpful but some of the information was last years and it would be helpful to have a 2023

  Thank you for leaving a pint of milk , and was nice to have some tea and coffee. vinegar salt and pepper, although would be really good to have some tomato ketchup as always forgetting this and am sure all guests will be having fish and chips sometime during the stay

  No recycling of rubbish
  Windows in the bedroom were difficult to open to let fresh air in
  Be helpful to have a couple of spare beach towels – we ended up going to mountain Wearhouse to buy towels
