Hotel Description

Honestly, I wasn’t sure what to expect when I first pulled up to Romano Estate – it’s tucked away on Gear Hill in New Mill, which is one of those spots near Penzance that feels properly Cornish without being touristy. You know those places where you actually have to follow your GPS because it’s not somewhere you’d stumble across? That’s Romano Estate. But when you arrive at The Courtyard, there’s this immediate sense that you’ve found something special.

The property has this lovely weathered stone character that feels authentic – I mean, you can tell it’s been here for ages, not some modern development trying to look historic. What really struck me was how quiet it is, especially considering you’re only about ten minutes from Penzance center. The courtyard itself (hence the name, obviously) creates this nice sheltered feeling, and the rooms actually face inward, which means you’re not getting road noise from the narrow lanes that wind through this area. Check-in was refreshingly straightforward – none of that overly formal hotel lobby nonsense, just genuine local hospitality. The woman who showed me around clearly knew the building inside and out, pointing out little details about the restoration that you’d never notice otherwise.

The rooms themselves hit that sweet spot between comfortable and characterful. Mine had these thick stone walls that kept everything beautifully cool even during a particularly warm September, and the windows – well, they actually open properly, which sounds basic but you’d be surprised how many places get that wrong. There’s modern touches where they matter (the shower pressure is excellent, WiFi actually works throughout), but they haven’t stripped away the personality to achieve it. What I really appreciated was the attention to practical details – proper bedside lighting for reading, enough outlets in sensible places, and a coffee setup that doesn’t require an engineering degree to operate. The beds are genuinely comfortable too, not just expensive-looking.

Location-wise, you’re perfectly positioned for exploring west Cornwall without dealing with the crowds that descend on St. Ives or the main Penzance seafront. It’s maybe a fifteen-minute walk down to the harbor if you fancy it, but you’re also brilliantly placed for heading out to places like Mousehole or even Land’s End without the hassle of fighting through town traffic. There’s decent parking on-site, which honestly is worth its weight in gold around here during summer months. The staff seem to genuinely know the area – I got some excellent recommendations for lesser-known coastal walks and a pub in Mousehole that I never would have found otherwise.

I suppose if I’m being completely honest, it’s not the place if you want a bustling hotel bar scene or formal dining – it’s more about the quality of the accommodation and that peaceful courtyard atmosphere. But that 9.2 rating makes perfect sense when you experience it. It’s one of those places that does exactly what it sets out to do, really well, without trying to be something it’s not.

  • Lucian from United Kingdom – 15 May 2025 (10/10)

The property was perfect for both family and friends, offering the option to book one or multiple units out of the five available. The shared common area was a highlight, featuring a lovely space for barbecues and a hot tub. The host was exceptionally helpful and accommodating. The location was also excellent—just a 10-minute drive from Penzance beach.

What could be improved: There wasn’t anything to dislike; everything met or exceeded expectations.

The location, quite place far from noise but close of the city when something needed from the shops. Very good location if you want to visit Penzance, St Ives, Land's end Porthcurno beach etc.
Very helpful host ( Craig), ready to help and addressed all our querries in no time.
    We'll be back for sure.
