You know what? I wasn’t expecting much when I first pulled up to Rock Cottage at Honicombe Manor – the address makes it sound like some grand estate, but honestly, it’s tucked away in this quiet corner of Callington that most people probably drive right past. The thing is, that’s exactly what makes it so brilliant. It’s this gorgeous 5-star cottage that feels like a proper hideaway, and I mean that in the best possible way. The whole Manorcombe area has this peaceful, almost forgotten quality where you can actually hear birds instead of traffic, which is pretty rare these days.

What really got me was how they’ve managed to nail that sweet spot between luxury and feeling like home. The cottage itself has this beautiful stone character – you can tell it’s been lovingly restored rather than just renovated, if you know what I mean. Everything feels substantial and well-thought-out, from the thick walls that keep things properly quiet (seriously, I slept better than I have in months) to little touches like actually decent coffee equipment and windows that frame the countryside like paintings. The parking situation is straightforward too, which honestly matters more than people admit when you’re hauling luggage around. I was there during what locals told me was peak season for the area, but it never felt crowded or rushed – quite the opposite, actually.

The location is one of those hidden gems that makes you feel slightly smug for finding it. Callington itself is properly charming without being touristy, and you’re close enough to both Dartmoor and the coast that day trips are totally doable, but far enough from the main roads that you won’t be dealing with summer traffic chaos. The cottage sits in these lovely grounds where you can wander around with your morning coffee and actually think clearly for once. What impressed me most, though, was the attention to detail – proper bedding that doesn’t feel like cardboard, heating that actually works efficiently, and a kitchen you could genuinely cook in if you wanted to skip restaurants for a night. The whole experience just flows smoothly, from check-in (which was refreshingly straightforward) to having everything you need without having to ask. It’s the kind of place that makes you understand why it gets those 9.4 ratings – not because it’s flashy or over-the-top, but because everything just works exactly as it should, and you leave feeling like you’ve had a proper break rather than just a change of scenery.

  Rock cottage was delightful, it had everything we needed and a fantastic view.
  
  What could be improved: We struggled with the oven at first, something had burnt on the bottom so it smoked a bit, it was fine after a good clean.

  Very well equipped with everything you need, just like a home from home. Excellent location. Would suit couples and families alike. Great to have access to the pool on the site. We enjoyed our meal at the pub as well, very reasonably priced.

  The property was excellent, clean , comfortable, welcoming and warm. Also an extremely well equipped kitchen. Water pressure excellent and hot water hot so long as follow very simple instructions given.
  The pub on site didn’t serve food on Wednesday, however the Rifleman volunteer is a 20 min walk away which did and was excellent. On the other days we ate at the onsite pub and the food was excellent, all homemade and generous portions.
