Hotel Description
You know what? I’ve stayed at a lot of coastal hotels, but Polmaro on Freshwater Lane genuinely surprised me. Saint Mawes isn’t exactly undiscovered territory anymore, but this place sits in just the right spot where you get all the charm without feeling like you’re trapped in a tourist fishbowl. The building itself has that weathered Cornish elegance – you can tell it’s been here long enough to earn its place, but someone’s clearly put real thought into keeping it fresh.
What I actually love about the location is how walkable everything becomes once you’re settled in. You’re literally a few minutes from the harbor (and honestly, watching the boats come and go never gets old), but you’re also tucked away enough that you’re not dealing with the constant foot traffic that plagues some of the waterfront places. The staff seem to know the area inside and out – they pointed me toward this little coastal path I never would’ve found otherwise, and when I mentioned wanting decent fish and chips, they steered me away from the obvious tourist traps toward a spot that locals actually use. Small things, but they matter when you’re trying to get a real feel for a place.
The rooms hit that sweet spot between comfortable and characterful. I mean, you’re not getting cutting-edge minimalism here, but that’s honestly part of the appeal. Everything feels thoughtfully chosen rather than ordered from a hotel supply catalog. The bed was properly comfortable (not always a given in historic buildings), and the bathroom had one of those showers that actually has decent pressure – again, small detail, but you notice these things when you’re unwinding after a day of coastal walking. What really won me over was the attention to sound – the windows actually keep the noise down, which is crucial if you’re a light sleeper like me. Saint Mawes can get lively during peak season, but you wouldn’t know it from inside your room.
I think what sets Polmaro apart is that it feels like someone who genuinely cares about hospitality is running the show, rather than a faceless management company just going through the motions. The breakfast was solid without being fussy, check-in was smooth, and when I had a question about parking (because let’s be honest, parking in Saint Mawes can be a bit of a puzzle), they sorted it out without making me feel like I was being a nuisance. It’s the kind of place where you can tell the difference between genuine service and scripted politeness.
Look, Cornwall has no shortage of lovely places to stay, and Saint Mawes specifically has become quite the destination. But if you want somewhere that captures the best of what this area offers – the coastal beauty, the relaxed pace, the sense of being somewhere special – without the pretension or the chaos, Polmaro delivers. It’s not trying to be the flashiest option around, and that’s exactly why it works so well.

The apartment was spotlessly clean with everything you needed in the kitchen including all cleaning and washing stuff. Towels are provided even a tea towel. The bed was very comfortable. Very peaceful even for a boat yard. Finding the way to the yard is a bit difficult at first and can quite easily be missed especially if you go in the dark so take it slowly going up the hill. All in all we had a wonderful stay and we would definitely recommend this apartment and hosts. By the way Anna Derek says sorry once again 😆.
What could be improved: Going down Freshwater Lane, it's not tarmaced so it certainly tests your suspension.Sharon from United Kingdom – 21 August 2024 (9/10)
Beautiful views, everything we needed in the apartment, parking right outside. Enjoyed everything
