Hotel Description

You know what struck me first about Penmor? It’s not actually in Bude – it’s tucked away in this tiny hamlet called Lower Penhalt, which honestly makes it even better. I mean, you get all the rugged North Cornwall coastline without the summer crowds trampling through your morning coffee. The place sits in this perfectly sheltered spot about ten minutes from Bude’s main beaches, and when I say sheltered, I mean you can actually sit outside without getting blown sideways by those Atlantic winds that seem to hit everywhere else around here.

The building itself is proper Cornish – all that lovely local stone that looks like it’s been there forever, but inside it’s been done up beautifully without losing any character. Actually feels like staying in someone’s really well-appointed country home rather than a typical hotel. The rooms are spacious (and I mean properly spacious, not London-spacious), and honestly, the attention to detail is what gets you – thick towels that actually dry you off, decent coffee facilities, and windows that frame the countryside like paintings. Parking’s right there too, which sounds boring but trust me, after driving those narrow Cornish lanes, you’ll appreciate not having to squeeze into some impossible space or walk half a mile with your luggage.

What really makes Penmor special though is how it sits in the landscape. You’re surrounded by these rolling fields that slope down toward the coast, and on clear mornings – well, you can see why people fall in love with this part of Cornwall. The coastal path is literally on your doorstep, so you can be walking the cliffs above Millook Haven in about twenty minutes, or head the other way toward Crackington Haven if you fancy a proper beach day. The owners clearly know this area inside out and they’re brilliant at pointing you toward the spots that aren’t overrun with tourists. They sent me to this little pub in Poundstock village that I never would have found otherwise – proper local place where the beer’s good and nobody’s trying to sell you clotted cream fudge.

The whole experience feels refreshingly unforced, if that makes sense. Like, the service is spot-on without being fussy, breakfast uses local suppliers without making a big song and dance about it, and the common areas are comfortable without trying too hard to be Instagram-perfect. It’s the sort of place where you actually end up staying an extra night because you realize you’re not ready to leave yet. And that 9.8 rating? Yeah, I get it completely – it’s rare to find somewhere that just gets everything right without any obvious weak spots.

Location was stunning the sea views were amazing. The pictures do not do it justice accommodation was comfortable even though starting to look a little dated. Was warm and dry beds were extremely comfortable. The day house is a brilliant extra and wish the weather allowed us to use a little.more.

What could be improved: Some of the accommodation was starting to.show it's age. Old electric heaters on wall not working and showing signs of rust. These have been decommissioned and replaced with lovely oil fired heating. Would look better if the old.ones were removed.
