You know what really hits you first at Newquay Blue Water? It’s this gorgeous cornflower blue façade that somehow manages to feel both classic and fresh – honestly, I walked past it twice before realizing this was actually my hotel because it looks more like a beautifully restored Victorian townhouse than your typical seaside accommodation. The location is pretty much perfect if you’re here for the beaches (which, let’s be honest, you probably are) – you’re literally a three-minute stroll from Towan Beach, and even closer to the main stretch where all the surf schools set up shop.

The inside surprised me too. I mean, with a 9.7 rating I expected it to be nice, but there’s this attention to detail that you don’t usually get at four-star places. The rooms have these lovely sash windows that actually open properly – rare these days – and on quiet mornings you can hear the gulls and distant surf instead of traffic noise. My room faced toward the harbor rather than the main Fore Street, which meant I could sleep in without being woken by the early morning delivery trucks (trust me on this one). The bathroom was spotless with one of those rainfall showers that actually has decent pressure, and they’d clearly invested in proper blackout curtains rather than those flimsy hotel ones that let light creep in around the edges.

What really sets this place apart though is how the staff genuinely seem to know Newquay – not just the obvious tourist spots but the practical stuff too. When I mentioned wanting to try some local seafood, the woman at reception didn’t just point me toward the nearest restaurant but actually recommended this little place up on Cliff Road that locals go to, and suggested I book ahead because it gets mental busy during the summer evenings. The breakfast (included, which is becoming rarer) features proper Cornish ingredients rather than generic hotel fare – their smoked haddock was clearly local, and the coffee was honestly better than most London cafés I frequent. Parking can be a bit tricky in central Newquay, but they’ve sorted out spaces for guests just around the corner on Berry Road, which saves you the headache of circling around looking for a spot during peak season. Overall, it feels like someone who actually cares about hospitality runs this place rather than a big chain just going through the motions.
