You know what caught me off guard about Merchants Manor Spa? The building itself – it’s this gorgeous Georgian manor house sitting right on Western Terrace, and honestly, from the outside you’d think it was some fancy private residence rather than a hotel. I mean, Western Terrace is already one of Falmouth’s prettier streets (those Victorian terraces don’t mess around), but this place actually stands out even there.

The spa element isn’t just thrown in as an afterthought either – they’ve really committed to it. Walking through the entrance, there’s this immediate sense of calm that hits you, probably helped by the fact that the original period features are still intact. High ceilings, proper cornicing, that sort of thing. The treatment rooms are tucked away in what I suspect used to be the manor’s private quarters, and they’ve managed to soundproof them well enough that you can’t hear the occasional traffic from the main road. Actually, speaking of location – you’re perfectly positioned here. Five minutes downhill and you’re at the harbourfront watching the Falmouth-St Maves ferry chug back and forth, but you’re far enough up Western Terrace that you don’t get the weekend noise from the pubs down by the Moor.

The rooms themselves feel properly boutique without being fussy about it. Mine overlooked the garden (well, more of a courtyard really, but nicely done), and the bed was one of those where you sink in just enough without feeling like you’re being swallowed. Parking can be a bit of a dance – there’s some space on-site but Western Terrace gets busy, especially during Falmouth Week in August when the whole town goes sailing mad. The staff seem to know their way around the local area too, which is refreshing. When I asked about walking routes along the coast, the woman at reception didn’t just hand me a generic leaflet – she actually sketched out a route to Swanpool Beach that avoided the busiest bits of the coastal path. Small thing, but it mattered. The 7.9 rating feels about right to me – it’s genuinely lovely without being perfect. The spa treatments are solid (I did the hot stone massage and came out feeling like butter), and breakfast was proper rather than just continental basics. If you’re looking for somewhere that feels like a treat but isn’t going to bankrupt you, and you want to be in Falmouth proper rather than stuck out in some business park hotel, this ticks the boxes nicely.
